We held the opponents to eight tricks for a bottom.  I was East.  I fault me for this result, because I knew that partner and I had no discussion of the meaning of doubles in this auction, and, so knowing, I should never have risked doubling.

My first question arises from the proper action I should have taken after the deal upon hearing South ask of my partner, “what is your agreement about the double?”.   My partner hemmed and hawed a bit, after which South said “never mind” and passed.  My partner thought some more and then passed the double.

South, by the way, is a club regular, always plays with his wife, and is an above average player although not a popular choice to win a club event.  I suspect he has 1000-2000 mps or so, as does his wife.

I suppose one could argue that the question is innocent enough, but I am perhaps prone to be suspicious.  I think he knew exactly what I intended my double to mean and was fishing for clues from my partner about my partner’s understanding.

My second question is requesting someone to find a past thread on a bidding topic.  Some time ago, someone asked the meaning of my double (after a 1NT response and a two level overcall) and there were some very helpful comments offered.  I think the best reasoned comments were to vary the meaning of the double depending upon the relationship of the suit opened and the suit overcalled.  For my partnerships for which I have discussed this auction, I propose that the double of the overcall be for takeout when the suit opened is a major and for penalty when the suit opened is a minor suit: perhaps not quite so good as some agreements, but easier to remember than some, too.  Can someone cite me that thread so that I can share the comments with my partner at today’s game?

Thank you.
