Upside down signal from H(H)T9

defending NT, at some point partner leads the ace and you have to signal.  You are playing upside down.  If you had H(H)T2 it would be easy, play 2 and can't go wrong.  But you were dealt HT9.  What's standard here? If you have a good explanation why, please comment. Does answer change if dummy has 2 small?
