USA 1 vs. ITALY
(Page of 5)

On the fourth day of play, in the 10th match, USA 1 squared off vs. the formidable Italians. It would be Kevin Bathurst and Kevin Dwyer sitting against Antonio Sementa and Giorgio Duboin with Gavin Wolpert and John Kranyak facing Norberto Bocchi and Agustin Madala.

The first medium swing went to ITALY. The Americans bid a good vulnerable game that essentially needed 1 of 2 finesses, but both were offsides (although, technically, declarer could have made it by dropping the stiff Q offside with KJ9xx opposite T76x), so 6 IMPs to ITALY. The Americans lost another 7 IMPs by going down 1 and down 2 in vulnerable part-scores at both tables.

Up next was this controversial hand:

6 is an excellent contract, but it is not easy to diagnose, because South has a flat hand and without North's 10 that enables the spade pitch, slam is not that great.

The U.S. North-South play a Precision system, and I am not sure of the meaning of all of their bids. The director was called based on what was presumably a slow 5 bid. As of now it is unknown if the table result is allowed to stand.

At the other table they stopped in 5 after a different auction:

The Italians gained 6, after the U.S. bid a game that was off one too many cashers, followed by yet another pushy game bid by the Americans not by the Italians.

Declarer received the only lead that gives him a chance: the Q. The lead is probably from either QJx or QJxx. If the latter, you may need to induce a duck of the trump ace to av
