USA1-Monaco Board 6
(Page of 3)

I woke up early enough to watch most of the round robin match between USA1 and Monaco. Here was the most interesting hand. We'll consider it from Bobby Levin's seat (hand rotated):

Do you bid?

Far from clear (to me at least). Bobby chose to pass. Steve led the 8.

Bobby ducked (would you?) and Zimmermann won the 9. He played on hearts, Steve taking his A on either the first or second round (there was an error on the Vugraph so I'm not sure) and Bobby discarded an encouraging 2. Steve switched to diamonds and Zimmermanncaptured Bobby's Q with the A. He finished drawing trumps, cashed the spade winners, and exited with a diamond to Bobby.

Forced to lead a club, Bobby chose the standard deceptive play of the T. This gave Zimmermann a tough guess. The full hand:

Zimmermann chose to play for split club honors; he went up Q, losing to the A, and finessed the 8 when Steve continued clubs. Not clear he should have gotten it right; Bobby would certainly lead the T from Txx.

At the other table, Rodwell opened 1NT, N-S got to 4, and Eastchose to sacrifice, getting E-W to the reasonable save in 5X where they went down 2, -300. 9 IMPs to USA1. A winning guess in clubs and it would have been 8 IMPs to Monaco.
