Well played Robson! for little reward
(Page of 7)

This hand generated very different results all around and many problems along the way. This deal is from England versus China (two teams on the edge of qualifying - England now 9th and China 10th)

First off, vulnerable at imps playing a standard system you open 1 and it comes back to you after LHO bids 1:

Suppose you are North on this deal, what do you bid over 3? Would you bid differently over 2?

Robson on the English team managed to pass 3 and so stayed out of trouble. At least one world champion bid 3NT with Forrester's hand. Would you?

You would get doubled and you would not enjoy the result.

OK now plan the play after the A is led (A from AK):

Now for the best part of this hand, watching Robson play it and make it. He was the only player in all three events to make 3.

Note the technique of ducking the second club rather than banging AK when you suspect a singleton on your left from the bidding. Given that LHO is expected to have at most three minor suit cards, you are planning to come to nine tricks with 5s (two via heart ruffs), A, AK and ruffing one club in dummy so you cannot afford to have the K get ruffed. Since RHO will have length in both minors, he will have to follow to the K later when LHO is out of both minors.

He deserved a better reward than to lose imps when his team mate went for 500 in 3X the other way!

So now off to collect some results on this board from other matches. Misfits with good hands like these can generate wildly different results

So far I see 2X by North down 500, 5 West down 3 undoubled, 3NT by East doubled down a few and several 3 doubled down 500.

Here are the all the results of the board in the Bermuda Bowl, no one else played 3:

and in the Venice Cup where two stopped in 3, neither making and one was doubled

http://worldbridge.org/repository/tourn/bali.13/microsite/Asp/BoardAcross.asp?qboard=022.16..981

and in the D'Orsi where only 4 people stpped in 3 , none making it
