Why the focus on "active ethics" is the death of bridge

I was watching the baseball game the other night when Albert Pujols got his 3000th hit.  A brief time out was taken in the game and both his teammates, coaching staff and opponents took the time to congradulate him.  The pitcher, who moments before had been trying his hardest to get him out, came over and shook his hand is recognition of this great achievement.  This got me wondering about bridge.... If someone wins, then someone has to lose right?  Compare with this:

A couple weeks ago I was directing a club game when an experienced pair was playing NS against a pair that was moving up from the 99ers game for the 1st time.  The following hand occured:

West
Kxx
QJxxx
Axx
Ax
East
AQ
AK10xx
KQJx

W
N
E
S

There were long hesitations over 4D and 5S.  The new players proceeded to make 7H, but it took around 3-4 minutes for the play of the hand.  Once the hand was over, West made a comment about being the 1st grandslam she had ever bid.  East piped up -- me too.

At this point the experienced NS called the director.  South:  The opponents are bragging that they just bid and made a grandslam.  West also took 4 minutes to play a hand that could have claimed at trick 1.  North:  Yeah, and East did not post alert that 4D might only be a 4card suit, and she hesitated a long time before bidding 4H.  I want you to look and see if West took advantage of the hesitation.   I did not change the score.  NS finished 1st with a 67% (as expected) and EW were 3rd with a respectable 52%, and ohh, they have not been back in 2-weeks.....

Imagine the change if the exchange following the grandslam had been similar to the baseball game.  N: Great, glad this hand came up for you, well done.  S: I remember I once bid 7 on back to back hands about 10 years ago, lets see if you can get another one on the next hand.....

Moral:  What does it mean when a new player hesitates?  NOTHING.  I actually content that this should be Authorized Information; after all, I am authorized to know that a new player/ inexperienced player or even a hopeless player is not sure what to do.  This is because they are NEW, not because they have ill will or are trying to cheat someone out of 0.7 masterpoints.  I mean who even cares once you have 5-6k about 0.7.
