Well done ACBL , a very encouraging move in the right direction. Agree completely with Boye re electronic and hope for past video. (Perhaps ACBL has a legal problem with past videos. ) With Mr Hartman's announcement they have time to get new legal opinions and waiver opinions etc. going forward. I agree also with Nicolas H re keeping some video secret and also with my good friend Mike Hargreaves, one of Canada's best bridge players and most respected lawyers ,on the overwhelming desirability of non electronic bridge.

For those interested in such petitions , please go to revivingbridge.com and convey your ideas to our ( Hamman , myself , and Street and a lot of other supporters ) . I am sure the ACBL is open to help in these matters.

The ACBL is concerned , probably quite rightly, about the legal consequences. I along with everyone else who is concerned ,hopes that the potential legal issues are dealt with as soon as possible by the ACBL:1) waivers signed like the EBL and I am sure the NFL where “ if you pay in the ACBL, you consent to be be videoed and that that video may be shown to the public, without exception. 2) waivers signed and outside legal opinions obtained stating the the player agrees to the decision by , as jet to be appointed, super committee of the worlds best players who can determine from looking at a large and suitable data base that there is clear and convincing evidence that Mr or MS X are cheating and therefore dis invited from the ACBL . 3) A Local network of our best players as recorders and that the recorder be given much more responsibility and lattitude. Again , good strong legal opinions from outside the ACBL that members sign off on when they join the ACBL which grants the power to the ACBL to remove their membership privileges for gross ethical and behavioral reasons that cover many more situations that they do at present. A much more pro active policy towards ”Bridge is a privilege not a right," and the legal opinions and investigative structures to back it up.

Agree with Brad . You don't finally get a new suit and then tear up your ticket to the Gala.
Who knew what and when ? A real opportunity for everyone to get involved at the NBO level
And offer help .

A lot of the inhabitants of NBO boards are , I think , unprepared and unqualified for the responsibilities they have taken on. There are not any qualifications required to be on the ACBL board other that a desire to be on the board. I think they are genuinely surprised by the demands .
We certainly have to share the responsibility for this current state of affairs as by and large we have not held the NBO's accountable nor have we stepped forward and participated if we felt we had the qualifications that the job demanded. We cannot blame people for filling a void that we ourselves chose not to . We can help change things but we have to become much more active. Bob Hamman , Paul Street and myself did indeed start a project , Ensuring the future of bridge . We got the support of dozens of top players in the ACBL and made a presentation to the ACBL in board in Chicago. You can read that process at our website reviving bridge.com. Please join in . Our suggestion , after laying our the myriad of problems facing bridge administrations today, was to bring in an autonomous working group, say 5 , of top performers in business and marketing and give them 4 years to address the issues and make any and all the necessary changes. The ACBL has a huge untapped pool of brilliant business and marketing professionals and as the proposal leaves everything else intact , we are quite hopeful that the ACBL board will accept this help. Please visit our site and lend support. revivingbridge.com

It won't lead to a split . It a natural discussion to have . The status quo is hard to move. The overwhelming majority of world class players are against electronic bridge

Hi Michael That is of course the right question at this point . I just arrived home after a long trip , northern rural VT , and I have an answer but need a little time to compose it as I don't want to be flip . I remember you being a pioneer in defensive UI issues . These scandals have opened up many important dialogues in the expert community .

What is interesting here to me is that the early signs were there , He peeked in hands etc. These transgressions should be treated harshly and too many ( just a few really ) of such cheating mindset revelations add up to long if not permanent expulsion. Playing bridge is a privilege not a right. You get three speeding tickets, you license is supended for x months. , you take driver education, you get your license back because you need it to work etc. driving is a privilege yes. but also necessary in many ways. Bridge is not like driving. Everyone can live without it. Therefore since it is our club, we should be unapologetically ruthless in these situations. I suspect that a number of people knew that Steve was unethical in a matter of fact way. Going forward such people need to be outed early and then thrown out of the game if necessary ( obviously cases will vary ) We do neither the game nor the Sions any favor by cutting them slack and it is everyones duty to report these players and the leagues duty to get serious about their entire process .

the ACBL needs to rework its entire penalty system. Playing bridge is a privilege not a right
Why were they not able to give a harsher penalty?

Well you know when it is based on partners vibrations if you have two logical alternatives . It is the alternative suggested by partners vibration . If you see only one logical okay then you know .
If what you mean by intuitions is “ not logical ” then certainly you know .The opposition to this proposal is grounded in what is lost . That is not easy to describe.
“ The heart has reasons that reason will never know ” Blaise Pascal

Remember a cheater will find a way to cheat so the discussion needs to be exhaustive .
As to letting the cheaters win , BW forum has not adequately investigated how the cheaters were enabled and allowed to go so far in bridge . Who knew what and when ? We need to get at accountability . There was just too much harm done to not do that .

If a defender takes advantage of their partners tempo to determine a play it is illegal . You must rise to the occasion and do the right thing . If there is a logical alternative to the play your partner's tempo suggests then that is the play you make . You need to stay very conscious and not be devious . There are other activities that have a high expected ethic . Serious golf especially at the pro level is self regulated in that way . Pro golfers have a strong ethic to do the right thing on the golf course . This is a topic worthy of more than a cursory glance . It goes to the very foundation of the notion of being a good sportsman . The extreme and radical electronic solution is saying that we are not strong minded enough nor ethical enough as human beings to be trusted to play the right way . The elation of winning or the depression of losing never lasts . We need to look very deeply at that . Who or what wins or loses ? The satisfaction and appreciation of playing the right way from the love of the game stays with us .We need to look deeply at that . Playing bridge has much to teach us if we look for it and those teachings are available to players at every level of technical /strategic skill. .

Brad is absolutely correct and having a fluid tempo hard to read is one aspect of a very well trained player . The second point about reading partner is of course illegal . We need to change attitudes such that maintaining the highest ethics is more important than winning or losing We need to appreciate that we have already “ won” by being at the bridge table and our motivation is doing the right thing for the love of the game . The winning and losing takes care of itself and doesn't need to be sought . Those who are consistently successful at bridge have come to know that the whipsaw of winning and losing distracts ones mind . For a lot of players this mind is a big leap but it is a learnable , trainable and freeing way to be. If this ethic became more important many of the problems we are grappling wth would seem much more workable if indeed they arise at all

Restorative justice is a sign of a very civilized country . Expulsion can and should be combined with restorative justice . However unless we are bringing in the police re fraud charges we have no leverage .
