Ross: Looks like the winning way was two rounds of trumps,SK and a spade to hand, CA and a spade up…

Dean: If the 3rd spade is ruffed on the right you have ten tricks.

I agree with Ross; trumps are very likely 3-2. So, 3-3 spades plus half the 4-2s plus W being 2=2 in the majors plus D.AK on the right is a good shot.

I prefer the other line…
Two rounds of trumps, then A, K and spade towards the Q.

No way would I knowingly install Chinese software that had not passed rigorous independent security checks.

I was waiting for someone to pull out the old “prejudiced” line. There is nothing “prejudiced” about facts.

“Poorly Made in China” is a horrifying book. If it were some baseless nonsense it would not have been The Economist Book of the Year.

Putting anything on your skin or in your mouth that comes from China is Russian roulette.

The difference between China and the USA at any time in the last fifty years is that there has been an effective court system in the US. That does not exist in China. If you have a contract with a Chinese supplier and they don't wish to honor it, you can kiss your stock goodbye.

PMIC details dozens of instances of major US firms getting shafted shortly after paying, and laughed at when they complain of a violation of contract. And zero redress possible.

As for my “predjudice”
- I currently live in a small village in Thailand and am the only Westerner for many miles, and happy that way
- People who accuse me of “prejudice” generally shut up once they get a look at my wife. She's black as.

Yes, all those who demanded that the event be moved from that Islamic communist hell-hole should go sit on a satay stick.

Other blunder is the failure to open 1.

A terrible auction, designed to keep partner in the dark, it would seem.

I have serious reservations about doing business with Chinese companies.

Read “Poorly Made in China” (The Economist book of the year) and I have no doubt that you will do as I did - throw out any and every product made in China in my kitchen and bathroom. Conclusions from the book:

- A “QC” label is ornamental

- ISO certification is meaningless

- The list of contents on a package need have no relation at all with what is inside (google: china melamine)

- Any contract with a Chinese company is unenforceable

- Any Chinese company may be what it appears or it may be a front for the Chinese Govt. (google: huawei security)

- In the event of a dispute do not go to China. Ever. (google: china stern hu)

Doing business with a Chinese company has real risks.

Yes, I did scan it for some seconds to determine its meaning. But the ranking of options from bad to good was the give-away.

In the absence of access to a computer at the table, we can come to a good answer using simple arithmetic.

One 4-4 fit:
We have a fourth-round winner about 2/3rd the time

Two 4-3 fits:
We have one fourth-round winner about 1/3rd + 1/3rd the time (2/3rd)

We have two fourth-round winners about 1/3rd * 1/3rd the time (1/9th)

This last case is the edge in favour of the two 4-3 fits.

Those who want to know more about the pitfalls of simulators should check this article by Richard Pavlicek; in particular the section “Double-Dummy Issues”.

Surely the first option provided should have been:

“This convention is so bad I am willing to pay Chris money for Chris to use it.”

That's a good, pragmatic line.

The late Tim Seres was a big advocate of such plays… he liked: “Lose the lead early and expose your shape and high cards late”.

I have never been to Nusa Dua, and very likely never wiil; to frequent 5-star areas when in Asia is not my cup of tea. The real fun is to be found with the locals.

Still, I follow that you are stuck there, so:

http://wikitravel.org/en/Nusa_Dua

This has some cheap local-food places:
http://www.1stopbali.com/nusa_dua/restaurants

This next person has the right idea - they like the local scene “up the road in Tanjung Benoa, the finger of land stretching toward Benoa harbour”

http://www.travelfish.org/blogs/indonesia/2011/06/30/cheap-places-to-eat-in-nusa-dua/

I can only say, make an effort to get out of the resort area and eat at a casual Indonesian home-style restaurant or street-stall.

Whatever those two directors have been smoking, I don't want any of it. It turns one's brains to rice pudding.

This is very close to an old Blue Team hand…
West (Forquet, from memory) got his ruff and Garozzo said, “From AQx, lead Queen!”

Regardless, there well may be a procedural penalty and maybe even a complete score change if EW are a coffee-housing pair not up to high-level defensive subtleties.

If EW are a weak pair it's no good saying, “A good pair would have done so-and-so” if NS have missed out on -500 because EW used table actions to resolve any ambiguity.

Alex:
I am all in favour of calling the director regardless of the score. Against a particularly unethical player of my acquaintance, I have called the director (before the advent of Recorders) and said:
“I am not asking for a score adjustment; I cannot get a bigger top. I want you to make a ruling and whatever it is, I will appeal it. I want this player's actions on file so that future committees can refer to it”.

You MUST call the director so that such pairs get known.

I think this discussion is somewhat upside-down.

The question is not, “What conventions can we supply the responder that will prevent huddles”, the question must be, “What can be done about this 3 bidder who thinks it's ok to move on over sign-offs, based on partner's pause?”

No convention is going fix her bad habits. We all know the (invariably weak) players who resolve the junk-or-penalties hand type after, say, 1 2 ? with a quick pass or a slight dither.

It looks as though the 3 bidder is in this class. She needs a lesson in ethics, not conventions.

Smith is not popular in Australia, so:
No BIT = count. BIT = suit-preference.

If one runs into any “issues” with directors or committees, simply say “I was thinking about the whole hand”, and everything is fine.

Next time, pls ensure that the hand diagram is laid out correctly. Having to turn my 27" monitor upside down was quite a chore.

True, partner's K is a weird card. Maybe he thinks it's “obvious” that declarer has AJ bare and is trying to show Q. Dunno.
