TO whoever posted this: You did not even write at the end that this was an April Fool's joke. Just think of how many people read Bridge Winners and believed this post. I just had a email from someone in Portugal who had booked his airfare and was planning to come and now thought this was for real.

And then consider how much work it is to plan and run a NABC. I have been there and done that. It is a killer. HUGE effort. Dozens of volunteers killing themselves. Hotel contracts. And this post may deter people from coming if indeed it ever happens. Yes, we may all be concerned that it may not be able to take place but let's all stay positive and hope and not spread rumors.

Call me a prude but I think this post was in very poor taste.

I agree that this is all like a bad science fiction movie or like we fell asleep in one world and woke up in another. We are all learning new lessons. I only know that in North America we are so mega lucky compared to other countries who don't even have the luxury of running water to keep themselves and their surroundings clean.

Stay well.

Carol Robertson's voice mail still has her recorded voice. Three weeks or so later.

Glad you are sure this will happen. I have lost all faith and am totally disenchanted. I agree that it was likely a case of “We have lost so much money, let's try to cut back and yes, let's select the longest term employee.”

In August last year when I inquired, the rest of the reply to my question about the loss of such a chunk of $$ …from a senior elected official…

“We have about 8mm in the bank so this hardly threatens our financials security”.

So, you see? We have nothing to worry about at all. They all know what they are doing.

It all makes me sick.

I believe that without clubs ACBL is nothing. Clubs create new players and thus new members. The Master Point system is ACBL's stock in trade. It generates tremendous enthusiasm for the newbies. These players are the ones that truly matter. It used to be that 75% of the membership was under 300 master points; I have not checked to see that this is currently so. ACBL can NEVER be better without clubs, IMO.

The baby is definitely gone, as is the bath water. It is all a done deal.

I was only talking about the ACBL Club Department in terms of the people that Carol trained. The project that failed was the CRM…this was what I received back from the powers that be when I inquired in August last year.

“The CRM project was way over budget , late, and had ignored standard migration procedures. The new management team felt that it was better to cut our losses on a project that was not working. Unfortunately, we were misled but were able cut our losses before this became another multimillion dollar boondoggle.”

Ed, I don't think normal people ever want to be “dumped” in this fashion. I like the watch and the cake symbolizing respect and appreciation.

I know she started working there at age 18, took some time off for babies and went back soon after. She was extremely effective at her job. The best. A perfectionist.

I know for a fact that it was sudden and unexpected. Carol did NOT retire and it was not her wish to do so.

She was not fired for any cause. Just position eliminated. I believe they are keeping it quiet because they know what an unpopular decision this will be.
How's this? She has been gone for 11 days now and her direct line still has Carol's voice and her normal voice mail message.
Maybe they are thinking…let's keep this under wraps as long as we can…
I despair.

The losses are indeed staggering. I expressed concern last fall (about the financial losses over the past few years) to the power (not powers) that be, I was essentially told not to worry as ACBL still has 8 million in their coffers. So what is a drop in the bucket like 3 million? It is only members' money.
In 44 years, I have never spoken ill of ACBL, I have always been one of their biggest fans, defending them forever. My faith is now gone.
Jay Whipple, last year's ACBL President, wrote this in the Florida District 9's Sunshine News magazine. https://view.publitas.com/acbl-district-9/sbn-2019-mar-may/page/12-13

It is alarming.

Gregory, the Executive Officer, Joe Jones , answers to no-one in these matters, not even to the Board. The buck stops right there.

The department has not gone, only that position and Carol with it. Yes, Dave is right, nobody cared more than Carol about doing their job well. Her integrity was NEVER in question. She is sterling.

I do not think I made it clear. Carol has left ACBL. No other position was assigned to her.

Bobby was a friend of mine. He was a great player and also a kind and gentle man. I thought the world of him. He once watched me playing Pai-Gow in Reno at an NABC, went away and returned an hour later to give me the odds and more information about the game. A sad day for the bridge world and for his family when he died.
Great hand; thanks Shireen.
