I think the bidder intended to make a natural 2D call, not a negative 2D call. Therefore I think 3D simply makes it sufficient and the auction proceeds. To me this is no different than 1C-1H-1D, corrected to 2D. Maybe the director should ask, away from table, what 2D was intended to be.

Points, shmoints. I have both offense and defense – two quick tricks and shape. A bit light – eight losers and I would prefer to have only seven losers. But not so far from a normal double that it needs to be alerted. If you don't double now, it might go Bergen 3H, pass pass back to you. Now what?

Peg, a slip of the tongue? It was Justice Stewart, not Justice Potter (“Potter Stewart”). ;) I think you just demonstrated the point. You clearly meant Stewart, but the brain said Potter. I would not call the director.

12:30 and 7:00 anyone? Waiting around for the start of the first session is what I find undesirable. A slightly earlier evening session would be preferable IF restaurants in the area are prepared to handle the early diners.

Ah, yes. I forgot that. I retract my comment about “simple” cheating, and I am far less concerned about the other silly forms such as sitting with experts, calculators, distribution probability charts, etc. I can't imagine many making that effort, and if they have to, you are right that they have already lost. Good luck to the competitors and god luck to the future of online competition!

Maybe already mentioned above (who can read this whole thread?), but isn't the following simple cheating a very big issue in this “NABC” event. All one has to do is sit in a room with someone else and let one player play the hand first. After seeing all four hands, player two sets about playing with full knowledge.

I am a supporter of online bridge – I think it is the only future. But this championship has to be seen for what it is. An experiment. And I suspect a successful experiment, measured in terms of participation (see the volume of players currently practicing). I don't care that some view it as a lesser form of bridge, but I do care about simple cheating in a robot tournament. I personally don't understand why anyone would cheat to win a robot tournament (or any other tournament for that matter) but we all know there are bad apples out there who don't see it the same way.

We play fit showing jumps (whether passed hand or not) unless an opponent has clearly shown the suit (here we don't know opponent's minor). We also avoid confusion by playing fit showing jumps only through 4D. We added that after getting knocked out late in the mini spingold years ago because of a misunderstanding about a jump to the five level.

And this. “ For research, the actors attended a bridge tournament in Calgary, Alberta, and actual players were used as extras in the bridge-playing scenes.” http://www.inforum.com/entertainment/4253282-5-things-you-need-know-about-season-3-fargo

Who can name the extras?!!

‘Fargo’ Season 3: Can You Really Make Six Figures Playing Bridge? http://www.thewrap.com/fargo-season-3-can-you-really-get-a-sponsorship-to-play-bridge/

“All that suggests a bit of where “Fargo” Season 3 might be headed for Ray and Nikki. They’re already embroiled in some dastardly doings by the end of the premiere, but the pair have big bridge plans going forward. It seems possible we could see them engaging some deep-pocket bridge fans for a sponsorship. And surely, since this is “Fargo,” nothing untoward will come of it.”

SPOILER ALERT: Maybe to appreciate it you have to be a devoted fan of Fargo and its somewhat sick but brilliant humor, which I happen to be, but the first episode had me in stitches. I loved the scene of the femme fatale begging her parole officer to let her leave the state to play in a regional, as well as the romantic scene where she wants to talk about how they came in fourth in the event. I question the ability of non bridge players to have any understanding of the references, but it was great.

Anyone have any solid information on the lack of any water in many (all?) rooms at the Sheraton this morning. All I got from guest services was they are working on it.

Since 2D is forcing and what you easily can bid with any hand with diamonds, we play the unnecessary jump as a splinter in support of clubs.

Am I any freer in third seat? Maybe I want to open an ACBL-defined “unbalanced” weak 1NT in third seat because I think it will have a preemptive effect. Call it a psych or whatever you want. Doesn't anything go in third seat?

With a 2N overcall, I make it. Can easily find a 5-3 heart game over it when I have three hearts. So this must be more than a 2N overcall with three hearts. I voted other because it is not more than a 3N overcall (for which I would have either a good 19+ power hand or a stopper and a solid long suit source of tricks).

We use 4C as a single-suited heart slam try. Partner bids 4D with a control rich hand or 4H without one. This leaves us better placed.

Number one change – going to cost and subscriber base – has got to be going electronic. Long term, as good as it is, I can only see this mag surviving as an online only product. Only the aging, declining bridge player population could possibly want to pay for the slick, expensive hard copy. I am in that class, and even I find myself with unread copies on my desk because it's just so much more convenient and almost as enjoyable to read articles on Bridgewinners or watch top play, with expert commentary, on BBO. I will never cancel my subscription, but I expect TBW to cancel it within a decade, if that long, if it remains as is.

I voted no, but only because I don't see why boards with good markings can't be had. Get rid of the boards that one must struggle to decipher.
