Those of you who play ‘system on’ eg 1H shows hearts - how do you play 1H over a 1D overcall that shows hearts?

As far as the UK is concerned my understanding(and I'm happy to be corrected on this) was that a lot of pairs simply didn't realise that journalist leads meant lowest from odd ,3rd from even. Rather, they saw the ‘required’ lead from 3,4,or 5 cards and wrongly thought it meant that you lead 3rd from 3 or 4 cards and 5th from 5 or more. Thus ‘3rd & 5th ’ was born - basically the bridge equivalent of ‘elementary my dear Watson’ ,it was never said but it's now part of the language.

A variation of this has been around for a while, check out ‘a new approach to bidding’ by John Drabble. A very interesting book for anyone interested in bidding theory.

Yuan - If interested in how the ‘simplest’ card combinations aren't simple at all then try Axxxx opp QJX and stiff 10 opp KQ98xx.

Since you don't mention N.Ireland you mean Gt Britain not UK!I knew Scotland was different, just assumed that for an American audience England and UK are all the same !!

Though any lead could cost I wouldn't regard the Club Ace as passive(especially from at most a 5 card suit).
Even so, my inclination is that lho has a horrible choice of leads and holds the HQ(more likely doubleton) I don't accept that partner is automatically bust(witness the actual dummy) - it could easily be right(though not probable)to lead a heart from Qxx

I think you should follow the same approach as whatever you play a double of stayman as.

'Odd horror' I think you're being very generous Barry. The appeals archive on the ACBL site features(as you well know) many such horrors ,but does show that things are overall much better now.

You have more bids available than you need here - I am convinced that pass should be to play in 2Hx.

I did say my view was old fashioned - as for the OED, definitions are constantly changing, literally!

Meckwell
Levin/Weinstein
Lauria/Versace
Bocchi/Madala
Fantunes
Helgemo/Helness

For me personally this fairly ‘obvious’ selection are the very best .

Clearly I am out of sync here - having seen the term ‘world class’ turned into a joke re English football I have a very old fashioned view. It's who you would seriously consider for a world team against another planet, that's maybe 8 pairs at most - don't try and tell me that there are so many great players that a choice can't be made.

Though I have not posted on this topic previously I am a Dean ‘supporter’ - yes he has been offensive on several occasions for which he has been punished(rightly in my opinion), just because someone has done something idiotic(and who has not?) there is no requirement to call them an idiot(or worse). However as good as this site is there is on occasion an element of ‘hero worship’ of the top players - Dean's alternative view could be refreshing.
From this last post it's clear he has a real problem seeing the viewpoint of others, and I don't think it's got anything to do with language or culture - all a bit of a shame really.

In a correspondence with Jeremy Dhondy on a different matter I asked him what the EBU position was on a situation I'd recently come across in an American appeal which had generated strong opposing views. I can't recall the exact pips but basically dummy (4th to play) had Axx and declarer xxx. When rho led the suit declarer had to decide whether to duck the first round - but he did all his thinking before playing from hand.
Jeremy had not come across this before and said he would consult with other members of the L&E committee . I don't know what the result was.

A bit of not strictly relevant history. In the famous 1975 Bermuda Bowl final one of the crucial hands in the Italian comeback featured a suit of J9 in hand opposite K8xxx in dummy. Declarer needed 1 trick without the defense taking 3.LHO had 10xx RHO AQX.The American declarer led small to the 9,whilst Garozzo ran J then 9.The consenus at the time was that this very slightly better.

In my youth I arrogantly thought that there was only one possible meaning for 2S here(and it wasn't yours) however since I''ve grown up a bit I would now say your interpretation is valid - as is 3055(not forcing) ,3334(spade concentration) or 4027(weak).

Strange view - if a pair agrees something specific(eg pass denies a 4card major) then that by definition is the agreement.
Whether they actually did have that ‘agreement’ is a different matter.

Pass is trying to find the best fit and asks partner to bid their lowest 4 cd suit.So with a bad hand I would pass with 4414 but if the opener was 1D and I had 4441(as per prev posts) I might not.
