I know. She did nervous mode. It’s easy to explain that. Being anxious is not a sin, just don’t express it in words. I think this is a good practical start to teaching UI?

South (student) mused for a few seconds and said “I’d have to bid at the four level”, then passed. When her pro bid four hearts I just shook my head and looked at the guy. It was a tiny five table club game and director was playing. She really abhors being summoned for this stuff. The sad thing is the student is the one who thought she did something wrong.

… partner of course cannot wake up, but this certainly is difficult at the educational level.

Should I alert without screens?… the fear being I woke up partner vs disclosure?

I am still confused about this topic. I like the idea of asking about all alerts so there is no UI to partner that I don't care what's happening, but this hand is another example of something :)?

If we’re going Biblical, some translations say that money is the root of all kinds of evil, not all evil…and more to the point, the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Love of money is often an expression of love of power.

I think you describe this perfectly. Being soooo slow when you are thinking deeply about every hand because you take bridge seriously is somewhat common. Not gamesmanship, but kind of ego driven when it is at the Saturday six table club game of 40 years.

Defenders can assume declare is missing the queen. Yes it seems like the pondering defender was trying to decide whether to win with the jack or ace. Everyone knew who had the ace, but declarer assumed the long thinking implied an original holding of AQJx. The thinking really just implied thinking?

Yes…the tricky part is that he could not allow his partner to retain the lead. He had to play the jack or the ace.
