I must be stupid Cameron I can't understand your allusion. I do think Mr. Hargreaves' comments are valid and the Spanish lawyer doth protest too much.

I knew very well to whom Mr. Rocafort referred, I just thought the comment malicious.

I think that Mr. Rocafort should be more specific with his comment, surely the generous sponsor and prestigious teammates would like to know about this situation. Otherwise it is spurious gossip.

In the meantime in the last two days Fantoni and Nunes have been drawn and quartered by the entire global bridge community. As Mr. Bobbio pointed out at the beginning, the whole diction of the piece was suspect. “An Italian court”? OK I can understand the comments, but still don't understand why the Dutch magazine would do this?

I don't think anyone really fell for this one. But the shutdown of the site did get to a lot of people.

Thanks for the idea of not rearranging hand after playing a singleton. I already sorted my hand under table and without ranking the cards.

I don't know much about the ACBL but the New Yorker article mentions there is no prize money at the North American Bridge Championshis. I knew the professional players made money from auctions (would Lincoln have liked this) and from their sponsors but didn't realize that there is no prize money at all, only prestige. Is this true, can someone confirm this for me?

There is also a short letter from me on the Op-Ed page of this issue, on a completely different subject.

Unless the writer of the first post has a definite allergic reaction to the odour of smoke on other players, I think she will just have to put up with it, as she would with bad hygiene, bad breath or something which can be just as strong, the odour of alcohol especially beer. The posts about Godwin's law are right on, I love this.

I think it is practically impossible on BBO, not to see an alert. Something is fishy here.

Chronologically I am one of your older group, but the behaviour you mention would never be dreamed of at our club although nearly all of us are over 70. First of all, food, drink and cards at the same table don't mix. This is for hygienic reasons as well as the mess food makes on a green table cover. Food and drinks are taken during a break, away from the tables. Is it usual in US clubs to bring your lunch and eat at the bridge table?
Then what you mention about people making inane comments and interrupting your conversation maybe hasn't much to do with these people's age, just their general rudeness or lack of respect for those around them. Probably they were like that even when they were younger. On the other hand older people often start conversations just in order to talk to someone, anyone at all, because they are lonely.
Try to be patient with us LOL's and LOM's.
