Once diamonds are established, make sure you cash the 3 before the 7.

At the table, since we don't play exclusion, I chose to bid 5, intending it as a bid as to how good his trumps were. This should have worked as partner has AQTxx A. We got to 7 down one. Not a bad spot, though.

One pair bid and made 7 when they played the J from the problem hand, they played low smoothly, and “they didn't cover, they don't have it” played the dropping the singleton K. My partner did not do that and went down.

That website shows an 18“ allowance for a chair plus 16” between chairs, so for a 34" table the total pitch is 86 inches. That looks like a good minimum.

Good stuff, John, thanks.

And you would also like to play in a major if partner transfers.

I will lead a small spade. Maybe they will duck.

The problem with 4 is that it has come up before and has been misinterpreted. But I suppose I could have pulled 5 to 5.

Like Michael, I would have tried opening 1.

And my point is that it is more important to have an agreement than what the agreement actually is.

It's not hard. I play 24 hands before breakfast.

Other. It's whatever your partnership agreements say it is.

I would say Keller is the best convention ever. Unfortunately it is too difficult for me to play. Maybe someday.

Your goal should be to take seven tricks as -100 will beat their -110. Going down 3 will be a low board.

I would duck trick 1 to RHO's king and proceed from there. You should have three diamonds, a heart ruff, and the A for five tricks and you need two more. My plan after that would be to see what they play at trick 2.

At trick two play the A like John said, not small to the K.

Once the A wins and all follow, I would play the Q. If they cover, great, if they don't I would fly A and play for the black suit squeeze (or 3-3 clubs).

What Craig said. Two rounds of trumps and either ruff a club or black suit squeeze.

I think it's very close between opening 1NT and opening 1 and rebidding 2.

I will have a problem if it goes 1-1NT-2-2 or 1-1NT-2-2, which opening 1NT will solve. Also, Qx is not bad for a heart contract if partner transfers.

The downside of opening 1NT would be if partner has 3=5 in the majors and you get to the wrong spot.

Opening 1NT with this hand is certainly not an abomination. Just make your best guess. Sometimes you guess right and sometimes you guess wrong. I don't lose sleep over hands where I zigged where I should have zagged.

I think the odds favor 1NT.
