Peg:
Have you had no success with handicapping events? Would the ACBL permit a “Double Handicap” special KO to encourage a team of us “regular folk” to play against experts?

A better way (through your tax policy metaphor) of encouraging people to play up would be to award BOTH the OA and SA to B and C players finishing high in the OA's.

Without the extra carrots there are no incentives. And without incentives most people would just quit, rather than play up. Most people HATE playing up.

FYI: There are also Gold Rush Swiss events. We won one at Vegas This year. The event had 45 tables, we played 8 rounds of 6 boards (finishing 8-0) and received 13.60 gold points.

Do they really report the mean age and not the median age? Do they know that is a “stastical lie?”

Keyword “forward thinking.” We all know this version will need to last 20 years if history is any guide.

Kevin:

You are blessed with a very well defined target audience, and congratulations on the bargain.

In addition to the excellent advice above given from Tom, I would strongly suggest talking with some people in that demographic first. Find out what aspects of bridge would get them excited? Is it the fact that WB and BG play? Is it because it is a competitive team game you can play anywhere? What do they do now? Tavern trivia?

What is your biggest challenge? I suspect, as someone in the top end of the demographic, it is the fact that most people in my cohort are busy trying to meet people, get married, have kids, raise kids, etc. You could turn this into a strength. What a great activity for “new” (young looking) couples.

Best,
Daniel

And if they are both at my poker table, I am leaving!

Hi Robb

Just an FYI: Gus Hansen has lost $20MM in on-line poker over the past several years. Full Tilt Poker finally just dropped him yesterday. That said, it would be fun to play bridge with him.

I'm asking Steve. :) And if Steve is in a pot I'm folding.

Does anyone else find the tournament recaps redundant with information already posted online in Daily Bulletins, BW.com, etc.? Seems to me this content can be shifted and money can be saved.

Allison made it back to the local paper in Charlotte, NC. She attends a very good college locally. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/10/06/5225007/davidson-freshman-crowned-queen.html

A modern UI would require significant training, but programs from 1993 are natural to learn?

And for reference, the Empire State Building is 1,250' tall (1454' with the tip). The Burj Khalifa is 2,717 tall (only another 5' for the tip).

Modern construction can do amazing things.

Thanks. Maybe “creativity” is the wrong word. Perhaps “judgement” is still the better word. I was just looking at both the science and art.

Did anyone else read the CEO's column in this month's ACBL magazine? I really apologize for what I am about to say, but I found it to be completely ridiculous. He compared fixing the current ACBL score to the current mass investment in improving the Empire State Building. Because, apparently, constructing sky scrappers and writing code both follow a similar process. Why did I ever waste time in Six Sigma training?

Would this be appropriate for the non-expert player? I have been looking for a book on advanced ‘tactics’ to enhance my creativity at the table. Most intermediate books are a bit too much “paint by numbers” for my tastes.

I have to believe that Hammond Software made the terms of the agreement 100% clear when the project started. Somehow the fiasco feels as if the ACBL wished to change horses mid-steam.

I remember those threads, but not the “new gold rush.” I'm just curious about what exactly it will be. It sounds very similar to other comments, that the strata breaks just keep going up and along with that it is always the same people in a strata.

I'm afraid any based rating system might take away incentive to play with a novice partner.

Disclaimer: I am not a LM yet. (Been playing seriously <2yrs, just under the old LM points/colors.)

SIDE TOPIC:
Did you notice this in the letter?

“Assuming the ACBL Masterpoint Committee recommendations are passed on the second reading in November, we will be showcasing a new Gold Rush format in Sarasota-Manatee. This new event allows a three-flight stratiflighted structure which will allow players with over 750 to play in a more comparable field before they join the A/B flight.”

So now 800 MP's is not enough to play in an open?
