“I am aware of one very well-known player who absolutely hates sitting in a seat where he is facing a corner of the room.”

Interestingly the NPC would need to know the table assignment for the match before submitting the lineups; at WBF championships, the orientation of tables is such that not all Norths are facing the same way. You can see one seat at each adjoining table - that seat happens to correspond to your compass direction - any “peeking” only reveals the hand you yourself are holding. Subtle, clever security.

Poker is not a card game. It is a betting game that happens to use cards.

“Bridge Card Reader” by Studio Diip out of the Netherlands was used at a few tables in Veldhoven, Lille and a couple other tournaments. If memory serves, it was not without its challenges. I suspect the technology has gotten both better and cheaper; it’s time to take another shot.

Tablet/electronic bidding in these world championship events is a no-brainer.

I challenge anyone to find a better dummy than at two of the tables (1 BB, 1 VC) board 32 segment 6.

AKQT3
A
8
AKQJ64

Declarer had a monster - J942 T86 53 T982. 6 of course was cold (6 slightly safer with less chance of a ruff, but 6 pays 2 IMPs more)

Simon de Wijs & Sanna Clementsson are hereby never again allowed to complain about receiving a poor dummy!

I’m sure one consideration is this new team (Levine; not Nickell) is likely eligible to play in senior events so we may see them in more of those fields.

As has been documented elsewhere on BW, hence public information, Nickell is losing one Eric & Jeff but gaining another Eric & Geoff. I believe beginning in the 2020 cycle.

South was a trifle conservative, but North can envision taking twelve tricks opposite an Ace & King (Ax xxxx xxxx Kxx; x xxxx Axxx Kxxx; etc). North should ensure game is reached.

How about you are dealt the best or second best hand? That should eliminate the gaming like passing one level forcing responses to opening bids and such.

I blame West for not overcalling AKQ9x non-vul as a passed hand. Not many can resist the temptation.

If we’re just counting the Olympiad, it would be 3 times running; 2012 was in Lille.

The way things are going with the WBF, I’d assign 66% chance China, 33% chance Europe, 1% chance anywhere else.

We love you Yu, but “Nothing on the strip is reasonably priced, there were no good dinner options“ destroys any credibility the rest of your post may have. On the strip there is every choice for every cuisine preference and every budget imaginable. Vegas is a world class food city. Casinos try to get you inside their location with great food offers. Holding the NABC off the strip would simply cause long lines for transport to get out of there after each session.

Mark me down for staying on the strip. I had a great time, there was lots to do and the hotel & food was top notch. I’ll be back in 2024 and spending 10 nights at Cosmo just like this time.

Saturday afternoons from like 1:00-6:00 is one of the more popular pool parties on the strip at Marquis Dayclub/nightclub. They were lined up by the hundreds yesterday steps from the bridge. It was not difficult for the casual observer to distinguish which event (bridge or pool) someone was there for :)

Super minor quibble but why are these always written in past tense? BW is the reporting the news; “After day 2, so and so ARE leading the field”. “Jane and Bob ARE 2nd”.

I won’t spend time on the basic Vegas primers – everything is further than it looks on a map (lots of vehicle/foot traffic, and properties are far back from the strip, though Cosmo is right on LV Blvd), it will be hot, drink lots of water, you can walk around with your alcohol, etc…

There are a couple of hidden spots inside Cosmo that aren’t listed/advertised, but for very different budgets –

First, a “secret” pizza place. No sign, no listing. 3rd floor near the other restaurants, down the long hallway next to Jaleo with old record albums. Should be popular for lunch. Then there’s the Talon Club on the 2nd floor. High stakes casino, bar, food. Caterpillar fungus soup for a mere $688/bowl. Everything likely comped because rumour has it you need to wire minimum $1 million to gamble before they let you in there. Pepperoni, anyone?

A few months ago, when in town for the Royal Bridge Wedding, I had perhaps THE best meal of my life at Kabuto. Edomae Sushi tasting. Incredible food, excellent value (similar meals in NYC or San Fran would be $400+). In a strip mall about a 10-15 minute ride from Cosmo. Small place, 2 nightly seatings at 6pm and 8:30pm. The rating/reviews speak for themselves. Currently #1 out of 4,149 restaurants. You need reservations. At this point, you probably need luck and someone to cancel an existing reservation. These things do happen. Enjoy!

The documentary about AlphaGo was terribly interesting, and all I could think of while watching it was, how do people far smarter than I apply this to bridge?

Which has now gone to overtime after Poland staged a furious comeback to win by 4 - but looks like the result on a wild hand was adjusted in Apple Pie’s favor, giving Poland 11 IMPs instead of 15. Possibly a slow double that was pulled?
