A truly fascinating peice of logic.
But it does teach us another lesson - if East had bid 2 diamonds immediately, none of the inferences would have been available.

5 was not forcing. Thus for grand still to make David needs K, K and A. With this hand he would bid 6 and not 5NT.

I think that it is perfectly valid to always ask for an explanation of an alerted bid. This ensures that there is no UI - although there is some delay. Of course you should inform the opponents that you always ask.

I have 18 workings points, 4 wasted points and a minimum.
Qjxxx, qjxxx gives a slam on one finesse.
Axxxx, QJxxx is pretty good.
I think 4NT is enough.

I play double as takeout here - so this bid is not a problem

and why if 11 points are already shown left, did she not go up with the heart king?

When was I supposed to bid 1NT?

The double of 5 was clear and set up a forcing situation. Then partner's pass shows a willingness to hear 5 - then South must decide whether to bid 5 or 6.

Cannot pass becasue 2 Diamonds passed out would be very likely.
Double is fine if it is notpassed out - anything else is too strong.

Kit - 2 questions:
What do you think a balance with 2 spades shows?
With 4333 distribution do you balance with 2 spades or double?
Or with 4342 or 4252 distribution?

Secondly - at red it is dangerous to double at the one level when the opponents do not have restricted values. So with 4144 distribution and 8 points I would pass and the nbalance over 2 hearts. Do you agree? Would you bid at the one level with Qxxx,x,KJxx,Qxxx?

By the way - I do agree with the comments about your articles - they force me to think about the game and my judgement at each stage.

I have a question - why should one have invitational bids at all if they are never used?

The vulnerability on the diagram is shown incorrectly - at red I would not have bid 5 Clubs.

I agree completely one should encourage clubs - why should one not have a diamond single or void.

I would open 1C intending on rebidding 1S as the base way of describing this hand.

Still the double should show a hand too strong to pass with unclear direction - thus east should clearly bid 4S
