The risk of the 5 bid is that it makes it easier for the defence. Kit, how do you value bidding 5 for the chance of making 6 against the added risk of going down in 5?

I do not think he handled the doctors as badly as many appear to think. He did not communicate what he was doing very well.

1) He tried to get the hearing of the case changed to a date where he could appear.
2) Upon receiving the evidence he appointed a team of top German players to investigate the accusations and suspended the doctors.
3) The players investigating all found that the doctors were guilty.
4) The doctors were then banned for 10 years.
5) The case is now going through the German legal system.

The only clear mistake IMHO was not giving back the title of Senior World Champion voluntarily.

Remember that all penalties will have to be stand up to an appeal in a court of law. Thus a life time ban is probably unrealistic, at least in Germany.

Screens are great. I do not see my partners face. It makes it much easier for me to remain ethical. It is much more relaxing.
That they are not sufficient to prevent crooks is a different issue.

I think it is very unlikely that the IBF knew that FS were cheating. The German Bridge Federation did not know that the doctors were cheating.
With hindsight it is very easy to say that they should have known.
So yes, Israel should withdraw. And no, they should not be bnned from international competition at all.

but maybe with the same hand and Q, East would have X 2 to protect his score of 120 from 1NT

If declarer has A8x then you should lead small from QJxx most of the time. How can you know declarer has the 9?

Cheating - do not underestimate the legal issues.
The german doctors are taking both the DBV (German Bridge Federation) and WBF to civil courts in Germany and Switzerland, although these have been bundled into one court case in Germany.

We must be exactly sure that what we do will stand up in normal courts. This is of course no excuse for inactivity, as cheating ruins the game.

Two advantages of 5.
- you will reach the best major fit
- you will reach a slam if it is making
Disavantage - every so often you go down in 5/

Game Forcing for me in all minor suit sequences allow me to stop in 4 of the minor if no stop found, in sequences such as
1 - 1
2 - 3
3 - 3
4

He does not need that much - take away the K and 7 is still good

I play 2 + positive forces to at least 4.
So this is not a positive.

There was a sequence like this in the Bridge World many years ago. Some commentators suggested the 4 bid showed a weak hand with 4 and a 6 card minor - which I agreed with at the time.
I would never spring this without discussion on my partner, but it is the only logical explanation that I can find.
I still would not bid it on this hand, but the bid would then not be ridiculous.

The hesitation before the 6NT could mean anything and would not influence my bid.
Partners bidding is strange - KJxxx, KQJ, Qxx, xx is possible.
It is 50% that he has K and not K. If he does not have it, it is 50% the finesse is right. I bid 7NT.

I would not have bid 4. I would not have bid 5. So it is difficult to answer the poll.

The question is perfectly reasonable. We do not know the motivation for the post - so you should not presume that the Flight A player wanted a top. Maybe the opps asked if 2 was allowed?
I think these discussions on Bridgewinners are valuable for all - there are so many people who claim that one cannot bid after partners hesitation.

Hallo Michael,
what do you bid with -,KQJx, KQJx, AKJxx.
I would have thought that would be a standard 2 bid

Solid suit without a stopper.
Something like xx,Ax,xx,AKQxxxx

With the hand with a void, I would start with 2
