I figured on watching the final 16 but awakened at 4:00 am. Immediately checked to see if the the 1st set of the day had begun. The USA2 was down going into that set and lost about 25 imps on the first 3 or 4 boards of the penultimate set. I went back to sleep. When I tuned in for the final set the US had the lead. I was shocked and excited to watch it through to the conclusion. The commentators made it clear during the 127th Board that even if the US bid the grand on the last and went down they would still win by 2. But 2 IMPS after 128 boards - this had to be one of the most exciting ever.

Great win! Fun to have watched Joanne and Shannon “tune up” at BRDBC a couple of weeks ago. Also enjoyed playing against Joanne and NPC Clerkin as they prepared at Jourdan's. It was clear that good things were in store. Very happy for all of you and look forward to watching the next event. So exciting.

Interesting. Partners do not have difficulty with my opening 1NT, or 2NT, or 2 Clubs followed 2NT, or jumping to 2NT after opening the bidding at the 1 Level, or responding 1NT or 2NT to partner's minor suit opening. All of these bids describe specific hand types and partner is enabled to respond appropriately depending on his/her hand type. Responding 3NT to a minor suit opening is no different. It describes a specific hand type after which partner can act appropriately. It in no way precludes further action. Most players I know are pleased when they have the opportunity to so accurately describe their hand. I have a balanced 13-15 with no four card major and at least two clubs. If partner has a balanced minimum he/she is pleased to pass 3NT. With extra length and/or strength they are not only not precluded from further action they are obliged to further describe those qualities in whatever way they deem appropriate.
Phew - sorry! I'll get off the Soap Box…

Of course you are right, Lynn. West's hand was shown in as earlier post. It was 954. QT96 A96 987

All understood! I am usually somewhat in touch with the better bids. Certainly not the case here, Lynn. Maybe I was getting a little overly sensitive since absolutely no one voted for what I told my partnerI would have done. Alas… :)

I am sure you are right about “Vulgarities”. It made no sense in context; however, Lynn's suggestion that the question shouldn't even be asked was a bit demeaning. I had a reason to ask for BW help and I got it - unanimity on the issue. Incidentally, I told my partner that I probably would have bid 3 Clubs so Lynn gets the last laugh. Thanks for your civil and wise input, Brad.

I feel very sad, also. Though I've only known Michael for a few short years he was always warm, welcoming and witty when I was at his table. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity spend time with. My condolences to Janice and the rest of his family. May he Rest In Peace.

Actually, a little surprised you are asking, Mike. Just too strong to pre-empt. Did you or partner hold these cards?

If playing Lebensohl 3s denies a heart and is game forcing giving partner a choice.

Doesn't Kickback require agreed trump suit. 5 hearts was my first thought (asks for two of the top 3). Does that give up on the possible grand. 4nt provides one with all the space needed to get trump quality (hearts- last bid suit) and side kings (spades) it cannot be mistaken as to play. Why pass 3NT?
