Hey David, I thought we were told they did it in the past and as they felt guilty, they wanted to come clean. I watched the videos and I wasn't able to notice anything, just breaks in tempo during the bidding. I felt something strange when I was playing the QF of the Transnational in São Paulo against them, but I cannot prove anything. The question is: where are the evidences? I would like to know if they would get busted even without the confession.

I am really impressed by your decision and happy that the effect of the recent discoveries is so positive that you felt you should take some action. Unlikely many people that judge a lot but do little, I respect the courage to assume a mistake and hope you can come back after the time you have to “serve”. I do not believe people cannot improve, in any aspect of life, this is your first step, being honest is always sublime. I congratulate you for your decision about revealing it, the right thing to do. Learn from your mistakes, better times will come.

They could also define that on board 1 tempo is “x”, board 2 tempo is “y”…and so it goes.

Yes, but when you add up time you're making the game slower and it would be very boring.

Electronical cannot prevent cheating since you cannot break the tempo in every hand or it would take forever to finish a match. Even playing in different rooms, it is not very hard to define a cheating system based on the compasses (I was told a pair used to cheat in a similar way in the past, but I do not remember which one). The players could define what is the maximum amount of time it takes from each table to bid or play (using the separate rooms idea), and start counting the compasses after that. Since the players are “in tempo” at both tables, they could exchange informations defined by tempo ranges, a scale that can be used to show strenght, lenght, distribution and preference. As you all can see, we cannot prevent cheating, they will always find a way to decieve us, just like in real life - where criminals work hard to create a system that makes it very hard for authorities to catch them.

If the only reason was the pack of cards, it would be already a very good one because Bridge is a card game, but there are many other reasons, like it was pointed out here by many of us.

Frankenstein is going to be the new Bridge, a distorted version of a beautiful game, a robotic activity, a big laugh from cheaters will echo in the saloon…

As I said before, I do not think it is a good idea, Bridge is a perfect game the way it is.

So you think there are many cheaters in high level competition? I don't think so.

I am not talking about the penalty, which should be the worst, I am talking about the comparison, which is absurd.

I do not know what the decision is going to be but if they are found guilty, I think at least the championships titles where they might have used the code will have to be returned. I am not sure how the federations are going to take it, but it seems to me that they will follow the WBF's decision.

Are you comparing a bridge cheat to a sex-offender, a pedophile? Don't go there, please.

Michael and everybody, We are losing touch with human beings more and more as time goes by. Bridge and other games are a way to connect people, so they can do something together. To play the game apart from each other would transform it in another thing, and would get the game very far away from being a sport. I do believe we can make the environment almost cheat-proof, but there will always be bad guys around, just like in everydays life. We just have to chase and bust them.

Since we are trying not to allow cheats to come around ever again, I think it is ok to ask and know about every “strange” actions taken by top players. It does not mean you have to bid and play always by certain standards or they will say you're cheating. They will only say you are cheating when your “shots in the dark” hit too many mosquitos, that's the point.
