Steve, in my opinion, this was not an intention. It was a fear of time distress.

WBF has a medical committee. It also has an antidoping sub committee. Their members are certainly qualified.

Nick, no, we will not make such a request.

It would not be successful. We do not have sufficient political power to enforce it. The fight against doping is holy, there are no exceptions.

The request would probably have a negative impact. There is a fight against gambling. Cards are sometimes associated with gambling and this is a problem. In this situation, asking for a doping exception would not be a good step.

Thx Steve for your understanding. I hope, we all know that cheating is the greatest threat to the bridge. Violation of the WADA rules is a negligible offense from our game perspective.

However, this does not mean that we will not comply with our legal obligations. Even in circumstances such as the comparison of unfortunate Helgemo case and the deliberate violation rules by Fantunes. In this way, we would relativize our relationship with law.

Justice is not fair, lady justice is blind. This is doubled when we must use rules tailored for other. But another way would be propably more worse.

Richard, for you, for me and for many other players bridge is not a sport. But for many others players, bridge is a sport. We are not solving this problem now.

However, the fact is that we have in our country official status of sport and therefore we must respect the national laws of sports.

The equation is simple: no WADA = no state support. Ok, this maybe no problem for ACBL with many sponsors, etc.

But for us this is difficulity, big difficulity. Similarly in other countries. Bridge in many countries is living only thanks to state support.

Steve, I understand how and why WBF's commitment to WADA was made, but I'm saying there's no other way today.

I will repeat from our law (law in many others countries is same):

The sports organization must to ensure compliance WADA rules.

No WBF rules, no ACBL rules, no Slovak rules, but WADA rules.

Fred, WADA compliance is not the result of the WBF Olympic involvement. WADA is typical for all sports.

Slovak Sport Act: The sports organization must to ensure compliance with the rules of the World Anti-Doping Program.

All sports organization mean not only olympics sports, but many other. Similar laws are valid through Europe.

WBF olympic dream is absurd, but the bridge - if we want it to be accept as sport - cannot avoid WADA. Even without olympic involvement, the WADA rules would be today apply in our game.

Yes Richard, director is supposed to take into account the complexity of the position and the knowledge of the player. But also that the top players make mistaken too.

Decision making is not easy.

Each player should know that the claim is a dangerous situation and should do so exactly.

Even the best players make mistakes. If those errors are not completely illogical, they must be considered.

LAW 70 - CONTESTED CLAIM OR CONCESSION

E. Unstated Line of Play

1. The Director shall not accept from claimer any unstated line of play the success of which depends upon finding one opponent rather than the other with a particular card, unless an opponent failed to follow to the suit of that card before the claim was made, or would subsequently fail to follow to that suit on any NORMAL (footnote 21) line of play.

Footnote 21. For the purposes of Laws 70 and 71, “normal” includes play that would be careless or INFERIOR for the class of player involved.

My opinion: some rules are cruel, but the director has to complete his mission, which is follow the rules of the game.

Btw: similar situation happen in football match beetwen MU and Paris Saint Germain.

My opinion has nothing to do with learn a bridge. Sometimes I play bridge or other card game in pub. But I see the difference between such a game and an official events.

The impact of alcohol on sports performance a wide-ranging theme in which the views of the professional public often change. Today, alcohol positive effects in most sports are considered small to negligible. In some sports like shooting, archery, darts or snooker, the ban is probably justified, but in our game doping's reasons are not mentioned.

I like the prohibition of alcohol for other reasons. I remember some bridge events from the 80's. A table full of empty beer cups, an ashtray full of cigarettes. Noise, dirt, smell. It was not a sports environment, it was pub. No, thank you.

Yes, the list of forbidden products is a global one (many arguments for and against). Particular sports may prohibited other additional substances. For bridge is prohibited for example alcohol (last year removed from WADA list) or beta-blockers.

Some information from WBF web page:

2. “Player information”.

Read this: http://www.worldbridge.org/rules-regulations/anti-doping-regulations/

Read the bold line from this page:

Players are strongly advised to download and read the following document: Guidelines for Players.

Guidelines url: http://www.worldbridge.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Players_guidelines.pdf

6. “Political decision”.

From World Bridge Federation Anti-Doping Rules (http://www.worldbridge.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/wbfantidopingregulations.pdf)

10.3.5. For violations of Article 2.10, the period of Ineligibility shall be two years, subject to reduction down to a minimum of one year, depending on the Player or other Person’s degree of Fault and other circumstances of the case.

7. “Concerning the penalty to the team, we're too with a strange decision.”

From World Bridge Federation Anti-Doping Rules:

ARTICLE 11 CONSEQUENCES TO TEAMS

An anti-doping rule violation committed by a member of a team occurring during or in connection with an Event may lead to Disqualification of all of the results obtained by the team in that Event with all consequences for the team and its members, including forfeiture of all medals, points and prizes…

Donald, I registered your opinion when you wrote about 30 pieces of silver. His repetition with other words is nothing new to the discussion. But if you feel that you have more moral than those with opposite opinion, you may try once more.

Steve: just to CaS. The EBL lost an important case before an independent court. It is, of course, very unpleasant, but that does not mean we have to cut off from an independent court.

I agree that cheaters can destroy our game. But we all know that the identification and proof of fraud in the bridge is a complex process. We can gradually improve it or cut itself off from civilization trends (radicalism and generalization is here very popular). This is also the way to destroying our game and becoming a closed sect.

Unfortunately, my English is not good, so I'm limited in the means of expression as well as in understanding the self-serving hint(even a cent of state aid was not used to reward anyone). State support is a majority of our resources. Without it we can not participate in international events, but more importantly, without it we would have to stop any projects in favor of the development our game. An alternative is the gradual disappearance of the bridge as an organized form.

With my remark I wanted to draw attention mainly to the fact that the situation of bridge in different countries is not uniform. And I repeat: our independence is untouchable.

Steve:

Funds go to clubs to support a youth bridge, especially young talented players. Yes, they also support the national teams on WBF/EBL tournaments.

What basic values have we sold :)? We have a lot of work with state bureaucracy, but our independence is untouched.

Bridge in some countries is living thanks to state support.

State aid is based on the fulfillment of certain criteria.
The fact that the bridge accepts WADA, CaS or the “Olympic movement”, helps to meet these criteria.

Dear Péter,

thank you for your kind reply. I agree that my young partner played this deal really nice. The ability to analyze our game in this way is undoubtedly beneficial.

But it also has its shady side. A good bridge player must have good memory. Who's remember a exactly phone numbers? Using electronics weakens the ability to remember deals, bidding, card play, etc. Maybe this is today just a marginal problem, even though it shows that nothing is free.

Bridge without cards (aka electronic bridge) is like sex without a living partner: just a poor replacement of the original. No rules will change that.
