Just like your book this story is a great read.

It reminds me of the times i tried to look like Don Johnson wearing a light blue suit , pink t-shirt and espadrilles ( without socks)..
It didnt help much though :)

I wish your team the best of luck in Montecatini !!

Speaking about “ BBO stars ” ; Isn't it time to ask BBO to DELETE ALL stars ??? After the cheating and the events in Wroclaw this is one more mess that finally needs cleaning up.

This is a great post Mr. Yates. Very, very well written and “spot on”.

Thanks for your message David, interesting to read. It is a pity but understandable that those players think like that.

I am afraid that players here will think alike regarding the big summer bridge festivals. Although there is no ( or very little) Pro-Client play there they have money prizes which i love ( 1st place a few thousand $ ).

At those tournaments there are no screens and no camera's (in general) . In light of everything that has happened the last 6/7 months people might think that many top players are cheating and in some cases they might be right which hopefully isnt true.

Combined with the switch from Live bridge to Internet this might be fatal for those big French festivals which would be terrible because I want to play there when i have time and money to go ( as i did 2 decades ago)

For all obvious reasons playing online replaced playing at a club. The only disadvantage is that you cant socialize with your partner ,friends and opps. That social aspect is much more important than we realize now, especially for people without a satisfactory social life.

Personally i'm happy playing online although i would love to play big , strong, international tournaments again (with moneyprizes) In Hotels & casino's (France. Portugal) . I hope those LIVE tournaments will still exist when I can afford to go again.

The atmosphere at a huge international tournament is something I just love and I will never feel that online.

I have never been there but I guess (COMPETITIVE) Amercan players have the same with Nationals…I am actually curious to know if that's true ???

Hi Gary,

Its clear that it is not a straightforward DBL for south but he is seated in the balancing position, not in the sandwich (like in your example).

You can look at it like this ;

if the auction is :

1-p-p-DBL is obvious
2-p-p DBL is obvious
3-p-p-DBL is obvious
4-p-p-p DBL is not obvious but it might be te best action.

A 5 overcall bij North is much more dangerous because you put all the eggs in one basket.

Agree totally with this comment. 5 is a brave bid and the winning action here. It is however far from obvious, the biggest problem is that Q10. With a singleton overcalling 5 seems much more obvious.

That is why we should look a little bit more to south..With his hand a double might be the least dangerous action to get us in the right contract.

Looking at the footage I must say that the players look suspicious. It surprises me that the Thai Police didn't use handcuffs :) :)

I only lead K from AK when i have AK bare( against suit). In almost all other situations i lead the A. When i want partner to unblock with the Q i can lead the K against NT with AKJ10(x)(x)

3 is invitational and this hand is worth one try to reach the vulnerable game in IMPS. 3 is the most descriptive try. If pd has the perfect hand we can make 6 but for now we try for game.

After reading all comments in this thread regarding the 7NT claim i would like to mention what i think about it.

- At the highest level calling TD is not sportsmanlike and insulting but allowed. To rule down 1 is insulting and unbelievable.

…….At club level this is different ( of course)…..

It's actually the other way round. A double is flexible and gives pd a chance to pass with balanced hands. A 4sp double is only pulled with shape and then 3crd support in the red suits is enough.

A 5 cl bid commits your side to play. With this hand that can turn out to be ( very) expensive.

Alternative is Pass

This is a great extra feature to this superb convention which I will implement at once. I am also thinking of playing “the Razwood 4 ♣ opening bid ” which is mentioned higher in this thread.

Why waste a lot of time with bidding at low levels when all I want and need to know is available by just bidding Razwood and ask ???

Declined Razwood and Overruled Declined Razwood are also possible after the Razwood opening so my partner and I can use those as well as we please….

I haven't played serious live bridge in 15 years but in the ninetees I played a lot.

The TD's and I were never friends in the Netherlands (with one or two exceptions, o.a. Erik van Dijk) . They were incompetent, biased , self centered and sometimes even plain rude.

Luckily I also played Big festivals in Belgium, France and Portugal where the TD's were much more professional with on top of the list a ( then :) ) young Rui Marques who was not only very professional and friendly but also strict when he needed to be.

I am glad to read that Rui is one of the leading TD's in the world now and hope to play in future events run by Rui.

The article above is a fine example of his skill, and professional attitude.
