Norman:“ I pay nothing to use it, why would I complain? Why do you complain? If you can come up with something better, do it, otherwise stop bleating.”
….Exactly!

Paul: “More computing power for more clients is nowadays so easy to achieve.”

…I am sure Uday would be happy to hear from you @Paul. Why not PM him and offer your services and expertise?

I had sent an email to BBO on Monday and got this response this morning.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us!

We are very sorry but BBO has system overload problems. We have reached maximum capacity for almost everything. We have stopped giving hosting rights (temporarily) to anyone, until our tech team manages to stabilize the system.

Meanwhile we invite you to play in any of the existing tournaments, some are free and some are pay.

For ACBL points, we recommend the tournaments in ACBL World.

Regards,

Aleksiana

1) This really isn't a concern at my club. I can count the number of times on one finger how often someone shows up in our small town/club without having first contacted me ahead of time.

2) No, not yet. I too am somewhat computer savvy but haven't taken the time to look into it. Having said that, I will do so over the next couple of weeks.

3) This will no doubt be one of the biggest problems. Any change in routine at the club creates disruption. Not having table 1 at the same place each week gets noticed so I can only imagine the feedback about “playing with computers”.

4) I always take the last sitout. This allows time to ensure that all names are posted properly in ACBLscore, clean up in the kitchen, start putting away supplies, etc.

5) Always a Howell due to the small number of tables.

(Edited to fix grammar)

“Sleeping on the Couch”. Sounds like a good name for a book! :)

As you say, there are several factors which will affect things but my experience, while not extensive, is about 2-3 months to be competitive in a beginner game. An intermediate game is more likely in the 9-12 month range.

Not only was Carol a caring and competent resource for all of my club questions, she always was able to point me in the right direction for any other non club inquiries I had.

As Ken mentions above, I do hope that the priority of clubs at ACBL headquarters does not take a hit.

I will be interested to read about the details surrounding her departure in a future Bridge Bulletin.

Word of mouth is what has worked at my small club in a small town. I tried advertising in our local paper years ago without a single response.

While our club's skill level is at the lower end of the food chain, the friendliness and hospitality is at the opposite end. That's what attracts new players and keeps our base players coming out.

Changing the pointed Queen to a round one makes the hand at least 1 trick better. I'd be more likely to X but hate the vulnerability.

I'm so old, I'd pass at the table. But I wouldn't be surprised if doubling is the winning action in the long run.

I too have had no luck. Now having said that, I only this morning tried to pick my choices.

Such a pity that Eric isn't with us to enjoy the return of the trophy north of the 49th.

My club is small - 5 tables on a really good evening. I usually play with a regular partner but if we have a drop-in from out of town or a regular without a partner, we try to ensure they get to play. If I'm playing, I'm directing which is probably the case for most if not all smaller clubs.

This is a great idea. We have a pair from the UK who play at our club for a few months in the winter. They found it unusual that we picked up our bidding cards before the opening lead was faced. I must admit that even though I like the idea and encouraged this practice for the rest of our club, it may as Michael says above, take a few years to get out of the habit. I don't see any downside.

Tom, I should have added a smiley face. It was not meant maliciously as that is not at all my style. A little humour can often go a long way.
