jxxxx kx kqxxx x is a 6-loser too. Are you opening 1s on this one too? My point is that you’ll often have a 6 or 7 loser when you have 2 5-card suits. So where draw the line? If 2H or 2S is a 2 suiter it’s always going to be 6-7 losers.

Yes, I was a pretty good hand for a 2S opening, especially non vulnerable where it could be only 4 of 2nd suit. I still am not sure when to open 1S and when to open 2S.

If anyone else can tell me what happened at other tables please help as I lost connection half way through and lost all the hands. So not sure how to find out what happened in the semis.

The auction was interesting. Ruth slightly underbid with a 2NT opening. Helene transferred to spades and then bid 4d, ostensibly natural (nothing was alerted). This worked out very well for them because now 4NT was clearly Keycard for spades. Some have the agreement that 4NT after the transfer to spades is quantitative hence the need to make sure that it didn't get passed. They did well. Should I have led Ace of hearts instead of a spade lead? Nothing seemed very attractive.

I play that if invited I will accept with any non-minimum. That means with a flat 8 opposite 16 we'll be in game. I don't think I would have moved over 1NT especially non vulnerable. If they stayman and then bid 2NT-3NT there is an argument for leading Hearts or spades. May as well lead hearts as a slightly better suit. If you do lead the 7H, you have to be careful to unblock the Queen if declarer takes the Ace on second round (which I did in the mid-game but too late). In any case they can hold up til 3rd round.

Ok. Will do. Our first match today is against Korea and the 2nd New Zealand. Only 2 matches today. From tomorrow there are four matches a day.

I actually think bridge might be more popular if everyone had 12 cards. The game wouldn’t take quite as long. Maybe all the 2’s should be removed!

Helene, you are so right. What an extremely generous gesture to get up at the crack of dawn to play against us. Kate, your ceaseless energy and generosity continue to abound. Thank you.

Partner opened 1H as N. East doubled and I toyed with 2c drury. Luckily I came to my senses and bid 4H making 10. Concentrating on BBO is extra challenge not sure why. Maybe partly because it all happens much faster

My view is that north should bid 3spades over 3 hearts without it promising any more than a balanced 12 count. By not doing so it makes it very difficult to know what to do after the next double. Obviously this is just a matter of system agreement but that is my agreement when I am playing a strong club

It's a pity you switched cards Kate. Rena will realise with her spades that you don't want spades and maybe will therefore realise it was suit preference any way!

At our table Helene opened 1S which I like. Bidding went 1S-2H-2S-2NT (enquiry) - 4S. Liz, I agree that voids make the hand potentially very powerful. I am interested in your reasoning behind preferring to preempt with 7042 as opposed to 7033?
