Yes in 1963 the group at Brooklyn College included Bernie, Ronnie Kaye, Jerry Shakofsky, Howard Marks, myself and a few others whose names I cannot recall.

It all begins in the home. Let's try to teach the very basics to kids/teens via on line tutorials with help from an adult. The ACBL should sponsor periodic Parent/Child or Grandparent/Child games at clubs using something even more basic then the SAYC. Maybe this is only a twelve board game once a month (with the lowest possible card fees or no fee for the first three plays).

Think of this as a adult/child shared activity and you may get interest. The biggest roadblock is that kids today have so many other demands on their time.

One of the problems that the internet has brought to “news” is the rush to be first without fact checking or confirmation. One sees this frequently on CNN and other cable/internet sources. Think before you post; if you cannot confirm something as fact, DO NOT POST IT.

THIS THREAD ADDS NOTHING AND SHOULD BE DELETED

Can you be more exact when you write “very few” pairs cheating at the top level. Would you estimate fewer than five? fewer than 10? fewer than 20>

Did this happen to Mike because he is Mike Passell and the committee was so blinded that logic failed? Now it appears that the uproar will cause a review and change. (I sure hope so!)

My question is - what would have happened if instead of Mike it was a Bracket Two or Three tournament player and the circumstances were exactly the same?

Is there an adequate review process to insure that committee decisions/penalties fit the infraction?

Yes, there is much speculation and people may be rushing to judgement.
A simple suggestion – shut this thread down and give Mike Passell 48 hours to tell his side of the story. Then open a new thread. No response by Passell, then all is fair game.

This is all very interesting but I would like to see detailed comments from Michael R., Steve W .,Jason F., inter alios. They have commented in the past about ethics. Do any other the major sponsors have anything to add as their comments would be welcome too.

Vince Lombardi said it correctly, Winning isn't everything; it is the only thing. But I would add along with good sportsmanship.

I am pleased to see that the USBF uses among its measures positioning points.

My design wood be —

World title …… 15 (some would argue world play should not be here)
NABC Big 3 team wins – 10
NABC 6 session wins – 8
NABC 4 session wins – 6
Reg 4 session wins – 2
Reg 2 session wins – 1

Call the above points any color or thing you wish such as titanium. All other points are just points.

Yes, it is elitist, but the top players are the elite and that should be acknowledged. Just for fun someday, it would be interesting to see the all time ACBL top 100 ranking on the above scale.

Everyone still can collect points and you can assign whatever titles you wish at various levels but you have only two types – titanium and points.

The only way I could justify a double is being in a barometer event with my position known to be third or fourth going into the last round and this hand comes up.

You are at a club game and complaining because a good pair bid a slam at your table that others did not. Possibly instead of taking the time to write this post you should have examined the auction of your opponents to learn how they were able to evaluate their hands to get to the slam.

Totally agree; you have two consenting adults playing within and by the rules of the governing body of the event.

How about the Daily Bulletins which include videos of play problems and interviews! Way ahead of the ACBL.

My solution would be let any pair requesting a NS have one. You could have a round with 20 N/Ss and 10E/Ws(give them odd numbers). There would be a NS sit out every other round.
Over time, natural forces would balance it out.

I find it ironic that some of the people who ask for stationary positions would benefit greatly from being E/W. One of my former partners had advanced arthritis and some lower back issues and always requested a N/S. I convinced him he was better off moving every 15-20 minutes. He resisted at first, but then admitted he felt better at the end of the round when playing E/W. Rheumatologists recommend frequent movement for many forms of arthritis and other muscular conditions.

The system is a joke because one can obtain the “coveted” LM status by obtaining colored points in events such as Gold Rush or playing against robots on line. The best way to learn and advance is competing in open events. To encourage that a scheme with fewer distinctions would involve something like –

LM - 500 points of any color and at least one platinum point or a one win in an open regional event.

SLM - 1000 points and at least five platinum points or two wins in open regional events

GLM – 2500 points and at least ten platinum points or three wins in open regional events

and so on.

But that will never happen because the business of the ACBL is selling masterpoints and rankings
