I abstained because I didn't start with a club and can't imagine why anyone would. This is another ‘Irish Cabby’ problem.

(An American tourist asks an Irish taxi driver if he can direct him to Dublin. “Yes sir, but I wouldn't start from here”.)

Pass and I've got two ways of pre-emptive in clubs, one constructive 3C),one not (via 2NT).

The only question I can see is “which spade?”

I could add Gerber onto my first sequence and get it up to 9 consecutive artificial bids but the last 4 won't be alertable. ( above 3NT)

UK lotto is much simpler, there is only one option: lump sum, and its tax free.
If you're daft enough you can buy an annuity with it….

And, as I have said, therein lies the problem.
Do the guys who make the rules actually play Bridge anytime?

But that's unrealistic Rosalind.
Bridge players can be very innovative and the combination of calls and possible meanings infinite.

2NT from west would be UNT for some of us.

John, might be for you, isn't in EBUland.
e.g. we announce “Stayman”, we alert Keri (using the alert card).

I blame the lawmakers, all they had to do was say that you could announce ‘forcing’ if your 1NT promises 6 or more HCP and that you alert it if it doesn't.
Who could argue with that?

And how did you calculate that Richard?

Doug, those rules do not and can not exist.
There is an infinite set of possible meanings for calls, you can't legislate for them all individually.

I was just going to make some up but it turned out easier to calculate them.

Your (semi) forcing 1NT might not be alertable in ACBL but it is elsewhere thankfully.

In this case I think N/S should get -400 and E/W -2110 which would be equitable as far as the room is concerned.
But then I'm a maverick.

My only argument with that Rosalind is I believe some ostensibly natural calls require alerting too. e.g inverted minor suit raises.

If everyone had your attitude Ronnie we would still be living in caves.

Besides, I don't just play in England and it would be nice if there was some consistency about the regulations across the world. For example my Grumpy 2NT opening bid is legal in EBUland but Brown Sticker according to WBF; so when I play on BridgeClubLive I have to tweak my system, its an annoyance.
