There used to be a vegetarian restaurant in Sheffield called ‘Kumquat Mae’; sadly, it did.

We also play 1M-4M denies an Ace, so a follow on RKCB is for Kings and the QJ of trumps. 5NT would then ask for queens.

Arrow-switching is more of a necessity than a benefit in order to get a good coverage of boards and opponents with small numbers of tables and a reasonably small number of boards.

A full Howell for 5 tables is 9 rounds (so 18 or 27 boards).

For my 5 table movement, starting position
19-21 @ 1, 1-3 @ 2, 4-6 @ 3
7-12 in relay between 3& 4
13-15 @ 4, 16-18 @ 5
Then boards circulate as normal.

If I get stuck with my ‘special’ movement for half-tables I'll send you a note Michael.

If I want to play 6 then I take a different route starting with a 2 range ask or if you are playing full transfers…

We play modified Roman responses to 4:
4 3/0
4 4/1
4 2 same colour
4NT 2 other

But just 30/41/2 responses to 5, 6.

Michael: I am quite inventive regards bidding, there is a lot of unique stuff in my system.

Interesting, because I never open out of range if I have a 5cM.

If you say so, but my system notes….

It doesn't come up very often but at least as often as wanting to play in 6C opposite a strong NT opening.

You bid 4 for aces, then 5 for kings, then 6 for queens.
N.b. Not TIC.

However if opener has 1xA, 3xK and 2xQ they don't have room for a J….

…and 2 -board rounds are even slower, you lose more than you gain.
If I have 5 and a half tables I play an 11x2 board Howell type movement but we struggle to play 20 boards. It's better than having a 3 board sit out though. I'm working on something for this but it's turning out to be the world's toughest Sodoku puzzle!

John: I use a double hesitation movement, there's a 6 board relay between tables 3 and 4.

Because in the Hesitation each board gets played 5 times and each pair play against 7 other pairs. Much better coverage than a simple Mitchell.

If you have an arrow switch its important that everyone plays all the switched boards otherwise the dubious statistical basis for arrow switches is compromised.

We try to finish by 22:30 because of occassional complaints from the neighbours; we are in a converted house in a residential area.

Have been using a double-hesitation; so 7x3 boards.
We managed to complete 20 on Thursday but were 15 minutes overtime.
I had withdrawn boards on the penultimate round.

Georgiana: if the Bridgemates are set up properly that doesn't work; the opening lead is only checked when E/W press ‘Accept’.
