I remember playing Vs Bernard and Rhona in Killarney years ago when I was in bridge nappys. I overcalled and they bid my suit twice to reach a right sided 3NT. Both Bernard and Rhona were at pains to explain what was going on. RIP

If your opponent is capable of robbing you blind with their 2S, then Dbl is mandatory and pay off when they have the points in the right places.

It's like camping in the woods, mostly lots of fun but danger may be lurking.

At the table, I decided to go for game so I bid 2 hoping that pd will raise with 1 trick over 3.

The consensus is clearly Dbl which has another string to its bow and you still can reach game if they wriggle to a red suit.

What do you think of a pass holding
xx AQxx xxxx Qxx ?

BW has been slow to unmask my original message, so here is the updated version …

I might lead a trump.
IMO the default signal would be SP. But you should entertain the possibility of 3 in declarers hand in which case East will give attitude.

Bidding 3S took away losing options from your weak/moderate opponents and risked even less match points thank you eventually got.

Hyper aggression rarely pays vs weak/moderate opponents as these actions box them into making a pragmatic decisions.

I give South the Kx(x), 6/7 and the A and presumably the K. With S holding 7, you need to bang down the A and hope the K drops.

If south has Kx,Ax,AKxxxx,Kxx and you cont. a , you are ok while a hands South the contract. However, Pard might have bid 3 with AQxxx, xxx,xx,Qxx

South might have KQx,Ax,AKxxx,Kxx but he may have opted for 2N???

So I'm guessing bang down the A.

Bridge is more complex than poker/backgammon (all incomplete information games), but in bridge you need two bots co-operating with each other optimally whilst also needing to disclose their methods/system to opponents - none of the other games require this. This latter part may be the tricky bit - translating the bot thinking into language (points/controls/length). However, I've no doubt bots will win when the combination of interest in the game and prize money offered reaches the required threshold.
Prediction: Less than 10 years.

Hi Ed, I don't think x by North is good judgement.

Hi Peg,
Great texture but 3nt is out of the question because of a lacking of bullets.
3 is sensible but probably is not a pairs action.
You will be in good company with your pass IMO.

I can also see partners reasons for X, but in their deliberations they may not have considered their lead Vs 3X. After the pass, they may have seen the wisdom of bidding 3

After A and an other, the pressure is back on you - Ok, that's why partners are there - to absorb pressure.

At this point Pd has 4 or 5 => declarer has 2/3
This points at declarers shape as 2-2-7-2 / 2-3-7-1 / 3-2-7-1

On the info available, Pd the the H!A - I think you next card is a little bid of a guess but have a look by playing the K

Best wishes, J.

LTC (and HCP) is a proxy for hand evaluation. It's primarily useful for inexperienced players when deciding how high to to go.

In a nutshell, an experts decision is based on -
1)The objective on the hand: complete, preempt or know when to stay silent with a fit.

2)The bidding to date: be able to project how the play is likely to go and revise the valuation of the points they hold.
E.g. bad points on offence might be :
QJ tight in opponents trump suit
KQx opposite partners likely singleton.

Kx over the openers suit is worth more than under etc.

Here is a list I made of the BB qualifiers ranked Vs the other qualifiers …

http://s9.postimg.org/xa53ly3kv/Selection_001.jpg

England and France come out on top.

My prediction for the semis are:
Bulgaria, USA2 (marginal), France (marginal), England (as they have dominated over the top teams).

For most, I expect the mouth watering match is England V USA1

New name: Mosca
After its inventor Carlo Mosca

http://www.infobridge.it/Campioni_MoscaC.htm

In Bill Jacobs book on Fantunes, he credits Carlo with coming up with the ideas.

Q: How was the system born?
A: (Fulvio) The inspiration came from Carlo Mosca

I lead the K cos I was more worried about layout being x opposite QJx (declarer).
Opener should be going for NT rather than however I realise it may be systemic.
