Well yes. West did not belive in overcalling 1Sp with 7hcp (all of them outside his suit), and the suit wasn't good enough for 2Sp.
Times were different back then.

Even if you wasn't sure it would be ruffed?

I suppose many do, but in this case West did not know for certain that East had a ruff. (Had East made a lightner double of 4H I agree completely with you).
Here he simply led the normal card (3rd from six).

South was void in diamonds so a diamond play by East would lead to 10 easy tricks.

What did matter for EW back then was if this was a clear count situation, or if it was attitude. Attitude makes some sense as East is dying to get west in for a second ruff.

But IF it is attutude (and this poll clearly shows many do not agree with this) it is also a matter if it is attitude for the queen or for a club ruff with a higher trump than the ten.

But should West encourage with the queen on the ace?
Does the ace promise the king?

And if the heart jack would be a small card?

I should have said so ofc. It did promise the ace.
I did edit the OP to add that info.

The reason Reese called it a steppingstone is most likely, as some mentioned already, because of the similarity.
This because declarer has the winners, but is blocked in both variants.

Nowadays I heard that a steppingstone is a secondary squeeze, and that per definition is a squeeze where you lose one or more tricks after the squuese has operated.
This is not the case in the OP, so by that definition the OP is not a steppingstone.

I have no problems with that, but Master Reese's name is what I think should prevail, even if I like Mr Pavliceks name too.

I recall a similar ‘coup’.
The trump suit was:

Dummy: Kxx
Declarer: QT9xx

Low to the king and East slightly (milli sec) huddles and ducks smoothly.
Declarer now played a second trump from dummy and plays the queen when East plays a second low card.
Alas, West discarded….

As I wrote in the thread Kit linked to, Richard P told me he called the position an ‘upside down’ squeeze. I like that name a lot.

On my screen North is partner to the 4S bidder.
The opener will ofc never reraise himself.

Pass and trump is a clear alternative as well. Pass also has the advantage that North might bid more even if that is highly improbable.

With xxx in hearts I would think 5D as automatic.

This is a 7 loser hand, with a ninth trump. That would for some conservative players be a clear game bid. But having spend the last 2 weeks in Ostend, I realise that the overcalls of todays players do not have to be as good as they used to be. So if North is a conservative overcaller or if he can have KJxxx xxx xxx xx, have to have some inpact on our call now. At least that is how I see it.

I always thought ‘exclusion’ had to be a jump.

Is it not also a matter of overcalling style?

In diamonds if I understtod it right, there was 10 tricks. In spades two more, but I am not completely sure of the layout. Doubler was something like 3343 3hcp with QJxx of diamonds.

I gave this problem to a lot of people and no one gave a satisfying answer how to handle this. Therefor this problem.

No, East just made a Striped Tailed Ape double, and you missed a slam.
