So you really think we're more likely to have a hand that wants to bid 5 than a hand that can take 3 defensive tricks in this auction? I couldn't disagree more but to each their own.

Sounds like their fit is diamonds, which they aren't likely to find at this point, and if they want to try to play Derber I'm fine with that too. Pass and hope we can go plus.

Without discussion, I'd say the vast majority would/should read 3 as GF, and everyone would read 3 as GF, so no way this can be passed.

I would have not doubled, I think that bid is asking for trouble, and may have just found some. I really try to avoid doubling with fewer than 3 cards in a major unless there's just no alternative.

I already forced partner to bid at the 4 level and he's shown zero HCP. If I thought there was a reasonable chance to take 11 tricks in my own hand, I would have likely opened 2.

Secondly, with 3055 I'd have opened 1 and I suspect 95-99% would agree with that, so that example isn't valid.

Also do not forget that partner passed over 4 originally, and nearly everyone plays that doubling 4 just shows points, usually about 9+ or so, thus my double of 4 already shows a very good hand given that we are forcing the action to the 4 level or higher facing a partner that can't have a whole lot.

Meanwhile, the odds are substantially more likely that I have a hand which is beating 5 and wants to double rather than a hand which can't decide whether to bid 5 on my own or not.

Benoit that makes no sense. Double says they are going down. Pass says DSIP which could include doubling 5, bidding on, or passing it out. I don’t see what I’m losing here.

FP takes #3 out of play because we’ve established ownership of the hand but a non forcing pass is the same hands except partner has the option to pass it out

Playing 1 over 1 responses to overcalls as showing 4+ and F1R just makes so many hands so much easier.

Playing these as NF just doesn't appeal to me, the opponents are never going to let you play at the 1 level unless you're in the wrong contract or you're missing something, and it's pretty rare that you can only take exactly 7 tricks and they have nothing their way.

In 2nd seat vulnerable, this should not be a joke hand, especially at Matchpoints. The last thing we want is to sign up for -200 on a nothing deal, so I would expect 3 useful cards over there.

Considering it sounds like there are 42 HCP in the deck, maybe I'm underbidding by bidding 7NT.
If this isn't claiming at trick 1, partner needs to to back to beginner bridge class and learn what a 2 opening is.

Well, A has 2 chances… 4 makes, 4 makes, also factor in both might make.
As for B, only both going down. so there are certainly more combinations where at least one makes.
Let's also not forget to factor in that beating one or the other may require a particular opening lead which may not be found, which is very often the case on these kinds of hands.

West may have just saved us from going -1100, so it seems silly to now force partners to choose between -1000 and -1400.
And as always, my rule with forcing pass: if you have to ask, it’s not.

I have no idea what else we were even suppose to be considering here. Clear cut 4

3 says bid game if you think you have a trick. I think I do.

That's why I use a conventional response to show 3 card limit raises. 1/1 followed by 3 both often time needlessly gives away information to the opponents, and makes the auction messy when partner doesn't rebid something convenient.

You can also ask the TD what their thoughts on the matter are. I have a few times when I wasn't sure and they were willing to suggest one way or the other.

Abstain because this bidding is just pure nonsense.

1 was definitely not a good start to this hand.
I am not sure about a 2/1 response, but I would much prefer to show a 3 card limit raise using whatever convention I have to show one. That'll most certainly interest South and he can take over from there.

With the 1 start, even after 3 North can save himself by inventing a cuebid over 3, I'd just bid 4 and pray. This was way too good for 4.

Partner is well aware that A: There is an awful lot of bidding going on considering everyone is vulnerable and B: We had a 4 bid available if we had a really nice raise. A thoughtful partner should take both these into consideration.

If my only choices with this were take 2 bids or pass throughout, I'd choose the latter.
