I was wondering when someone was going to vote for pass, an action which I strongly considered at the table. I don’t really know opponents well enough to know if they’d open 2 suiters with 2C I’m afraid

Apolohies, I slightly modified a hand I played so the bidding doesn’t quite work. Let’s say the bidding is as given and it was a lead out of turn, accepted by south.

Well I watched Robson/Forrester miss this defence so it can’t have been *that* easy

I’ve thought for some time that it would be better to alert/announce say, a two clubs response to one notrump if it is NOT standard Stayman; similarly, alerting a two diamond response that doesn’t show hearts etc. The reason for this is that if the bidding goes 1NT 2C and there is no alert then the world will just assume that the 2C bidder has either forgotten to alert his 2C “Stayman” bid, or that 2C being Stayman is so commonplace that there’s no need to alert it. Transfers and Stayman are now so much the norm that it’s far more important Imo to alert a 2C/D/H bid that doesn’t show just that. (Sorry this doesn’t actually answer your question.)

Thanks everyone for your comments, and I’m interested to hear why some people thought I misbid the West hand. Like the majority here I chose to pass at the table. This was the losing action when partner held AKTxx xx Axx Jxx and everything split nicely. If anyone has any opinions on weather slam could/should be reached I’d be interested.

Indeed the only reason I posted the hand was to find out if people favoured 1N over 1C. I wasn't anticipating any other responses! Based on the result I might to a follow up poll to see how people would bid after 1C - 1S

Why is the spade ace more likely than the heart ace? NS’s bidding is nuts in either case so I’m not sure how I can work out which!

Why should declarer draw the inference that East has no spade?

Obviously you should state a line of play, but I find it hard to believe that the opponents were quite so penickety. If my opponent were to do this without a statement then I would say “what’s your claim?” If he still didn’t mention ruffing the spade I would consider calling the director at a high level competition

In any case I’ve added it in the body for clarity in case other people don’t read the comments

Yes the misdefence was irrelevant to the UI. Thanks for your explanation

Apparently I have misunderstood the bridge sense of the word “damaged”. What I meant was: Were EW affected negatively by UI or any other unlawful methods on this hand when 5D made 12 tricks (on misdefence)?

@Buddy Either before the opening lead or on the final round of bidding (I think it was after the bidding but I'm not 100% sure), West enquired about 3S and that's when South said she believed it was a splinter

Playing kickback, shouldn’t 4N show a control in diamonds/hearts depending on what p thinks trumps are?
