I disagree with Jay on this one. It is a pretty clear pass. I am curious, Oren, what happened at the table. Did South find the magical 2S call, hit pard with the right 8, find game and win a match?

I agree with Craig with 1 addendum. I want to congratulate my RHO for making that double so I do not have to bid 2H.

Big nono by kibitzer. I am surprised that there was not a request by one of the teams for having the kibitizer barred for the entire match.

To be honest, bridge's survival has to be recruiting players younger than college age. They need to have scholastic programs in elementary/middle/and high schools. If not, bridge is dead in the US in 20 years.

Great performance by the Fleisher team. They never had a close match throughout the event which is VERY impressive these days.

I abstained because I do not know if I have Reverse Drury on the card. If so, 1S. If not, 2S.

As a player that has 1000 to 1500 points, this discussion is vital and to be honest, I think that this convention is vital for slam bidding regardless if one plays Serious 3NT, non-serious 3NT, the Townsend flip(which is my preferred methods if asked). Without this tool, one is guessing after cues if they show extras or not.

I need something disgusting to downgrade a balanced 15. This hand has issues but does not qualify for the disgusting category. I would decline game vul at IMPS with this hand, nonVul at IMPs makes my job easier.

Bob, I abstained from the problem because I will not play 1S as NF in this auction. New partner please.

My issue is that I hate this situation because I want discussion about Serious/Non Serious 3NT if I am playing with a true expert. If expert does not play Serious/Non Serious 3NT, I want to know if they play Peg Kaplan(no extras, 2nd round control minimum denying missing controls) or something else. If no discussion, I pray that my hand is a clear signoff or a clear push for slam.

Mike, you have to throw out Board 18 from your count(unusual 2 opener on a 2 count showing 44 or longer in the majors, white vs. Red). At the other table, Rosenberg/Pepsi play Multi(thus no 2 call) and the French through multiple takeout doubles starting at the 1 level after Pepsi opened 1 were allowed enough room to find that contract. The issue is that after Lebensohl 2NT, is 3 natural showing a very good but not 100 percent hand or a cuebid showing a monster which has nothing to do with a relay system.
Board 18 is a system fix because Moss/Grue nonvul play 14-16NT with frequent upgrades while the French play 15-17NTs. Joe has to invite with his hand after the Smolen sequence and miss because Brad's hand could be much worse and Brad has to decline because his 15 count has no Aces or a 5 card suit. Joe's opponent at the other hand does not have to invite a 6NT call to cater to the 14 counts or possibly 13.
Board 21 I do not know followups after 1-1NT. Board 22 that board has been discussed ad nauseaum by stronger players than myself. In my view, this thread is a very incomplete picture of the effectiveness of a pair playing in the Bermuda Bowl. Slam bidding is important but one also has to look at the swings generated at game and partscore level because of methods. To achieve this goal, the closest metric that I know is Butler ratings. Does anybody know what Grue/Moss Butler rating was for this event or does anybody know what Butler ratings measure?

To Eric, what is 2-Pass-2-Pass-2NT? If that sequence shows this hand, do that sequence. If that sequence does not show that hand, my vote is 1NT.

David, I agree. For those fortunate enough to watch the trials today, it was a blast.

Like Ian, I abstained because Oren needs to put in the negative double agreement in the problem. If I had an agreement that X shows 4 or more spades and 1 denies 4 spades, I bid 1. If I had an agreement that 1 shows 4 more spades and X denies 4 spades, I double. If I had an agreement that X shows 4 spades, and 1 shows 5 or more spades, I would reluctantly pass and curse the bridge gods.

Kit, I am curious on why Serious/Non Serious 3NT is not used in this sequence as a way of setting apart certain hand types?
