Why would “they” want to sell? They get a nice income, with virtually no money invested beyond paying the kid $2.50 per hour. No maintenance on the site. Some sanction fees to the ACBL if they pay them. Sounds like a comfortable little gold mine to me. :)

Um, Barry, you are the one who jumped into this “argument”, the one who decided to enter this particular conversation.

The claim was made by Andrzej that chess was not solvable. In fact, you agree with my statement completely, as you just said. So it appears that you are the one who has decided to waste your own time, and mine.

For a lot less money? BBO is free for me. Do they pay you to play? :)

Yes, I know, if you want to play tourney after tourney for points, then eventually OKB will can save you money.

Guess where I spend my time. For no money at all.

You miss the point. That does not make it unsolvable. Just not currently solvable, with any hardware we have at our resources.

Not true. Chess IS solvable, but currently on so in theory. Chess is not currently solvable in practice, with the hardware we have currently available.

Art - I never said there was no need for a trial. I said we need to have a trial. That they did indeed cheat is a fact as far as I am concerned, but my opinion is not relevant.

There are other factors I forgot to mention. A computer will never tire. How often have we seen the play in the last matches of a long event drop a bit in quality? A computer will never miss a card played, or have a blind spot.

As soon as I see someone claim that computers will NEVER be able to accomplish some task, I know that it is indeed close to being doable.

The individual pieces are becoming available to solve the problem. This won't happen immediately. My guess is 5 years before computers are close to the line, depending on whether there is a concerted effort to tackle computer bridge.

Yes, I know, some of you talked about table presence. Yeah, it'll never happen. Again, a silly claim there. Anyway, even if a computer never was able to use table presence, who cares? They are already getting stronger than we are in some aspects. Every person, even a top pro has some aspects where they are better than others. So even if a computer never developed table presence, who cares? And who cares about table presence when playing against a computer opponent? The computer gives out no tells, so your advantage is gone already. However, a computer can see how long you thought about a problem.

However, computers can learn about you, and they can learn a lot. They do have better memories than any human, more consistent, longer, storing more data. Do you tend to open light, or are you a solid bidder? Do you fall in love with certain hand shapes? Given a choice, what suits might you tend to lead from? Might you have preempted on a 6 card suit? The depth of their knowledge can lead them to better play against you.

So as I said, when there are a lot of people saying something will never happen, at least some of those people are getting nervous, so they claim it will never happen, more to convince themselves that their position is safe than anything else. After all, the Maginot line was impregnable.

I agree completely with David. I also don't want to see F/S (or any of these cheaters) return to play because of a failure to act, due to their home organization never convicting them at all.

What evidence do you have that the hearings will EVER be held by the IBF? So far, there is only one set of evidence - continuous postponements. That seems to make the case against the IBF more and more clear to me.

IBF = laughingstock: YES!

F/S = cheaters: YES!

Ah, so my conjecture is now indeed verified. The IBF has no guts after all. They just wanted to appear as if they did, as if they really did want to deal with F/S. Instead, they clearly want to postpone it forever, until all of the people who have ever heard of F/S die off, or at least, until we all get bored. This way, the IBF never has to deal with legal defenses, with aggressive reactions by F/S.

Yes, Hanan will now go on the defense, as after all, he is the delegated appeaser of the IBF.

I'm sorry, but this is all a crock. We all know what is happening. We see through this very thin veil.

So, my question is, I honestly think there are at least a few members of the IBF who do have guts, who do have integrity, who do love a game played fairly and honestly. Why are you not shouting for this to be done and be done with? Help to clean up the game. If you don't do so, then you enable cheaters to spoil the waters for everybody.

More information seems needed. Was 1♣ precision? Was it natural? What do we know about 2♣? Michaels in some form? So majors, or just any 2-suited hand?

How about leads? Does the 8 deny the 10? (With some of my partners, the 8 would be the system choice from T8xxx.)

Huh? You say that you cannot pass 2♢ OR pick a major? What should you do? Fall on a sword and jump to 5♣ or 7NT? The rules do not say that you need to do something stupid, just because you think that partner made a mis-bid, and you think you saw a tremor. You need to treat partner's bid as if it is correct and ignore the tremor.

So why is 4♡ making a problem? If 2♢ is properly alerted as Flannery based on your agreements, but it is not, and 4♡ manages to make by pure dumb luck, then you got lucky. That is not fielding a mis-bid. It is doing the proper thing. Nothing stops you from being lucky along the way.

Hanan, you simply don't appear to understand my comment, or perhaps, you don't want to do so.

That those people are busy is not a surprise. What IS a surprise is that there are NO individuals who were chosen as alternates. Even more of a surprise is that people who would be known to be too busy were chosen. That suggests those who made the choices of who to invite want this to just quietly disappear, all the while making the IBF LOOK like an organization who is actively pursuing the cheaters. That they do not now add some alternates who could do the job, and who have time to do it, this gives a great deal of credibility to my claim.

For those who commented about the length of the rebuttal pages causing delays, that is just an excuse, but an invalid one.

If I am given a job to do, with a date wherein my task must be done, then one thing we learn at an early age is to budget our time. After all, it is the committee who themselves has set the reschedule dates. So if they won't have the time to read the docs, then they should have given themselves sufficient time. All of those committee members have certainly spent enough time in school. I'm sure they had homework to do. And if they are gainfully employed, especially as busy people as you claim them to be, then they should know how to manage their time!

So I'm sorry, but these delays are inexcusable. Set a date that is adequate. DO YOUR BLASTED JOB AS YOU AGREED TO DO. Or find someone who can and will do the job. When that fails to happen, the world sees the truth, and that truth does not reflect favorably on the people the IBF has chosen to represent them on this matter, and therefore, on the IBF in the end.

The buck stops with the IBF: squarely on the shoulders of the IBF, an organization who apparently only wants to appear as if they are on top of things, while they are avoiding the issue as deftly as they can.

Feel free to prove me wrong. But your arguments so far simply don't hold water.

You are forever banned from using UI. Exclude that tremor from your mind.

However, YOU MAY at some point decide that partner may have mis-bid from other sources, but that is a risk too. Is it impossible that partner might make a slam try here?

Others act on the UI and feel it is acceptable. I can't control what others do, nor how they think. I can only try to teach them, mainly by my own actions.

I am the only one over whom I have direct control. It is my own ethics I must be able to live with.

A 4♢ bid will surely be passed by partner, and it is a great way to “solve” the problem, IF you want to field the UI.

In order for partner to not do this again, they need the shock value of you playing this in 4♡, redoubled if necessary, minus 1 million.

I don't see the lack of stop card as a problem. The stop card is not there to wake up either you or partner that one of you just did something strange.

On the current hand, accept that you are probably going down a ton. You belong in game, in 4♡. If they double, you have such a good hand with a known 10 card fit, as well as a spectacular “side” fit in spades, that you should probably redouble. If partner rebids 5♢, this is clearly a slam try. The UI is ABSOLUTELY not usable by you.

One board will not hurt anything. Yes, it will damage your current game a bit, but your honor is worth more than one board in one game. Well, it should be so, and if you are asking this question, you already know the answer. Of course there are people who will smoothly field the UI. Do you really want to be one of them?

In the future, iIf this teaches partner a lesson, then fine. Perhaps they will now remember that 2♢ is Flannery. If it ever happens again, then do the same. Eventually partner will learn, or you can decide as a partnership to stop using conventions that will not be remembered.
