RIP Beth, you were the best - a wonderful player and a wonderful opponent and a genuinely nice person. You'll be missed. Condolences to all your family.

Or perhaps a pre-alert. “We don't play transfers over our 1NT opening”. I can see that. I hate the idea of alerting a natural 2M here - everyone will assume a transfer.

I have been playing in WBF Championships since 1978 … yes we alert behind screens as the opponents have the right NOT to ask. Mostly they do ask but not always.

And I have played 1NT-P-2M as NATURAL the whole 40+ years with multiple partners! While I agree it is not all that common over a strong NT, it is increasingly common over a weak NT where IMO the investigative abilities of 2-way Stayman out-weight the dubious ability to “right side” the contract (especially when responder may well be stronger than opener).

I do go out of my way to alert 1NT-P-2D as GF artificial … usually by re-alerting to make them ask.

Agree with Frances and Steve B! The problem seems to be convincing some NBO - with the appropriate facilities and resources - to hold it (which usually involves raising a large amount of $$). That rules out most smaller NBOs, Canada included.

In 2018 at the WBF press conference they definitely mentioned Istanbul.

But it is now a year away (or even less) and will be a challenge for most to organize.

This upcoming World Championship will likely be my last trek to China - just too far and too many time zones.

With Bridgemates also do not really need scorecards, pencils, etc. Although I'd miss keeping score and it might be harder to catch Bridgemate mistakes.

Screens do assist with some forms of collusive c***ting, and perhaps were originally intended for that, but as we have seen sadly they don't stop it all. For me their biggest advantages are the minimization of unintentional UI, and for whatever reason, an ability to concentrate better. Love being able to ask opponent about bids without partner knowing.

I'd play every F2F board with screens if I could.

A lovely tribute, and a lot of wonderful memories.

Agree with Shawn - this will almost certainly be the last time I visit Vegas. Crowded, noisy, smoky, expensive - generally in your face obnoxious. And everything bridge is a long walk and confusing. And I agree with the silliness of not selling coffee near the playing sites!

Apparently you just had to wait a little. Now many hours later we do not seem to know the winners - amazing incompetence.

According to Wikipedia:
In 1999, FIDE was recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Two years later, it introduced the IOC's anti-drugs rules to chess, as part of its campaign for chess to become part of the Olympic Games.

Suspect more digging here (https://www.fide.com/) to determine whether CAS is involved but I'd guess yes.

Excellent point. I've often wondered why most organizers don't seem to tell the nearby restaurants/bars what the “rush” hours will be, and that they may need extra staff then, not at the traditional times.

I voted no but neither choice is quite accurate. I can certainly see more frequency for some sites but not permanent. Unlike many I suspect, I do not particularly like Vegas or Florida. I do like to visit interesting cities as I do not play for 10 days straight any more. Then again given the expense of an NABC …. I may well be irrelevant to the discussion.

The four team events overlap exactly … it has always been this way (back when only two (Open/Women) and then three (add Seniors) and now four). Basically a week of round robin and then a week of KOs. There is a “consolation” transnational after the round-robin open to any combination of players eliminated and new players as well. You can find the schedule here:

I rarely read online magazines - but MIGHT if they came in EPUB or MOBI (Kindle) format for my e-Reader - yes books are OK electronically for me - much easier for plane trips and carrying around! Like Richard above, I read very little of A New Bridge Magazine now that it is online.

We used to get two version as well (different last names) but a simple email to ACBL stopped that waste at least!

Agree this seems ridiculous - and surely there is a way to have many more teams play Day 1 of the Vanderbilt?? Is there a rule that you cannot reduce 68 to 32??

So back in the mists of time my team won a Masters Mixed Teams which does indeed qualify for GLM status should I ever get to 10,000 MPs (which I won't - I may never get to 5K given how little I play now). So if this means I cannot play in a 0-10K event, it is hardly the end of the world as I usually would play “up” not “down” in all circumstances … but it would mean that at a Spring Nationals I might not have an event to play in opposite the Platinum Pairs as some of my regular partners are not qualified for that event.

It seems sensible perhaps to limit two such qualified people playing together, or multiple “national” winners, but one?

A ranking system would be so much more sensible.
