“Nothing about online teaching. Impatient”
Must not have extrapolated from your earlier
"There should be more discussion of small club concerns in the future. But the Forum's members have to be the ones to get the discussion going."

You're going to throw people out if they don't answer your poll? IMHO, that's drastic. Only you and Moese have that power, right?

And after only 11 hours … yes, drastic!

Hardly any time to play unless I'm filling in with a single in a game I'm directing.

And then the game isn't directed as well as I'd like, and I'm not as good a partner as I'd like to be.

WE had LBIAD? presented by Patty at our 2015 Regional and the 2016 NABC. Follow-up in 2015 consisted of a post-LBIAD? reception for the students – as a table helper I attended, and ended up with six students. Two are still active in local clubs. LBIAD? students got lists ovf local clubs and teachers, but the local clubs and teachers got no contact information from the local LBIAD? organizer about the students – as I remember, the reason was was “privacy concerns.”

We also got no information about the 2016 LBIAD? students at the NABC; they all had the flier for the new 0-20 game though – and that flier was at enough other locations for newbies that our 0-20 game got a good start (see above).

I thought it was time for another LBIAD? this year, but it'd not happening – in part because I'm too overworked, in part because I'm not a star recruiter of unpaid volunteer help.

If we ever run another LBIAD? and I'm involved in any way, the student sign-up process will include their giving permission by default for teachers and clubs to receive their contact information – they will have to opt out to prevent this happening.

Jeff,

Offering something for $FREE may have the recipient valuing it as worth $FREE. Have you considered putting a minimum $5 price tag on everything? A drop in the bucket compared to your normal table fee, but at least the recipient has to place a non-zero value ont what's received.

I know, you have the 40 years experience in your market and I don't – maybe I will learn something fornm your reply.

My club, as most in our area, tacks on the “extra dollar” (or two) for the “special games” entry fees. Players who don't read (or forget what they read) in the e-mail or on the schedule posted at ACBL Club Results are used to coming in just before game time and asking “How much this week?” Special games don't seem to have much effect on attendance (if anything, the STaC and GNT seem to have more tales than average) and for most they are a wash income-wise as the “extra dollar” is just passed through to ACBL. Different for STaC, and GNT, as the per-player markup gives a small extra margin to the clubs.

The week before the local Regional attendance is up, the week of the Regional the clubs are closed, the first few days after the Regional the attendance is down (players “bridged out”), but picks up later in that week.

the three-quarter (reduced) Howell movements work for 24-board games and are built-in to the movement files that come with ACBLscore. Some have more than one table with a resident pair, all but one such table have the resident pair swapping fom N-S to E-w and vice versa.

The 3/4 Howell for four tables has pair 8 stationary at Table 1, Pair 7 plays 3 rounds N-S and the final three rounds E-W at table 2. Warning: these two tables relay boards with each other every round.

“Sounds like a job for the Unit Membership Committee” – if it exists. Even the Unit Membership Secretary (a required position?) is still an unpaid volunteer.

The Common Game won't include results from them in its winners lists. But they provide more Masterpoint-winning opportunities for players in Alzheimer Fund games, and my players want more Masterpoint-winning opportunities. So, in an effort to be a better business-person, I offer the players what they want!

We started our 0-20 game immediately after the 2016 Summer NABC, which included much geared toward newbies, including LBIAD. No idea what was coming – 26 players showed up the first evening! Not all were from LBIAD. 9 of those initial 26 are now active ACBL members.

Google makes some $$ from selling ads. They can charge more the more valuable the ads are. Measurements show these new improved Smart Campaign ads are more effective at reaching the target audience, so they are encouraging advertisers to use them. “Google Properties” are many, including Youtube, Picasa, among others.

So if your advertising budget includes online ads, you should investigate further. At least that's what they want you to believe.

They convinced Steve Moese enough that he felt this was worth sharing with all of us, and asking us to provide feedback if/when we do run a Google “Smart Campaign” ad campaign.

All of that without reading a word outside this article, not even clicking on the link.

Hi Chris,
Pick your own from among their suggestions. Not a \d contract being the most obvious.

Beer Card has been an extra in club games I run, first (or every) player who scores the Beer Card in any hand in the session wins a Free Play.

As for breweries, best bet may be a craft brewer in the home city of an NABC, with a timely one-shot production o an appropriate number of cases and kegs.

Unless, of course, the next ACBL CEO is a super-marketer with good connections, and the BoD lets him do his job.

I can see an NYC brewery doing an Honors Beer Card brewski for Jeff, if he has appropriate connections and a bar on his premises.

An ACBL member's name and number on a new one-month enrollment, online or printed, can put $5 in that ACBL member's pocket – so the financial reward is built-in.

Relays with beginners are VERY dangerous! But with small clubs/small beginner sections, you face them sooner or later. Much director involvement helps … maybe that's why they don't do them across the river.

Tom has the best idea for your club!

Four table Mitchell requires a skip, but allows four stationary pairs.

I used four table Howell with 0-20 group, two-board rounds, everybody played everybody which was great for both social and competitive reasons, but the 0-20 game across the river is afraid Newcomers can't master Howells, so they play the four-table Mitchell with the skip.

May not be appropriate for your level of competition, but but still has some advantage over no Bridge at all.

Hi Randy,

At this point there is no LA to ACBL. And we all know how rapidly and effectively ACBL's BoD acts, and how effective the CEO is in making changes (“tinkering”).

We have seen for decades how responsive ACBL (both BoD and Management) is to requests for changes/improvements (“tinkering”).

IMHO ACBL won't change unless it has to, and it doesn't have to until there is a real LA to it.

In the meantime, we have little choice but to work with what we have – so we do so.

Meanwhile, I still have board sets to pre-deal and hand records to print.
