The woman's KO did not die, it was killed by the schedule.

When the Spingold and Senior Swiss started on the same day. Plus all those mini Spingolds … It was the addition of the Senior Swiss that killed it in my opinion.

Jackie was wonderful and a great “mom” to my caddy son.

Many years ago when my son Paul was 14 and caddying at a Washington DC Nationals, I had an unexpected day off and decided to go visit my 89 year old aunt with Paul in the Shenandoah Valley for the day. Naturally Paul, being a teenager, did not want to come with me. Jackie overheard our argument and promptly fired him for the day, telling him in no uncertain terms to go visit his great aunt. We are both very grateful to her for that!

Thank you for everything Jackie, you will be greatly missed

Steve said to say HI to Crazy Nat. He is not on here often nor is he very sociable but I will PM you his email address

Yes he is a hand hog but I love him enough to let him get away with it :)

I was once playing in the Master Mixed Teams with Helgemo. After a few rounds he turned to me and said, “Kitty when you are playing with me you do not have to steal all the hands.”

My Steven? He took up the game as a teen (played with his Dad) but quit for 20 years, was already an LM when he quit at about 30. So yeah he won his first National in his 50s …

In my experience very few make it to the top ranks who were not at least exposed to the game as teenagers or in college

It is interesting that the six other times 4 was the contract, every other West defending cashed the AK first.

Next three Wests tried cashing A (in fairness one heard partner open 1), one tried another (as did helgemo defending 5), and only two found the shift, Sadek and Brink.

this is as reported by the BBO archives http://www.bridgebase.com/vugraph_archives/vugraph_archives.php

Niels you do not know what you are talking about. Most experts play that 4 is an inquiry over this 3NT as to range and hand type, thus East shows about an opening hand not wanting to miss a slam when partner jumps to 3NT

Yes luckily right sided however

Some of us just prefer playing IMPs whenever possible. Especially as we age, less grueling, usually

Brigitta
I feel your pain, I also check every morning and it all hurts.

We have had plenty of cheaters over the years in the USA. Video taping by the ACBL has caught many of them, at least at the regional level.

The old sheriff, Kit Woolsey, decoded the pencil signals of Sion -Cokin among others in the past.

I think it is just less well publicized and old news and the game cleanup has been done here for the most part. I have heard no whispers anyway.

Sion and Cokin signalled with the position they put their pencils down on the table after writing down the contract (pre-screens I think). It was the brilliant Kit Woolsey who decoded that.

“Wonder” was indeed a genius at bridge but had huge character flaws. An enormous ego and a real disregard for others but lots of charm and fun to be with. He meets the definition of psychopath as I understand it (see https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/wicked-deeds/201401/how-tell-sociopath-psychopath ). He was part of my crowd when I was learning the game back in Boston and I spent a lot of time with him and the rest of the group and played with him some as well.

Sion was caught cheating at least once more (stacking cards in a swiss on video). So it was not the original case that got him out permenantly.

Wow, I played with Sion some back in the early 70s, when I was young and single. We even played a regional nonLM pairs (we were only 2nd) and he never asked me to cheat but then his objective with me was probably more about the bedroom than about winning at bridge.
Also perhaps my reaction to noticing him peeking told him not to. Hmmm maybe that is a way to feel out a potential cheating partner …
