I can remember when teams would go to the stairwell between rounds of a Swiss to “burn one.” But this was long ago (early 80s).

OK, so if you want to change the conditions of contest, assume that 3 just promises another bid. If you bid 3 and partner bids 3, what now?

“If you had a hand that was suitable for Keycard, but were constrained by your methods to cue-bid instead, wouldn't you have a 4♥ cue-bid?”

OK, so you control bid 4. Partner's s aren't good enough to control bid 4, so he has to bid 5m. How exactly do you ask for KCs?

That's the conundrum. With only 2s, there's a decent chance partner can't bid. But you have no good call here.

I don't know about the dancing, but totally agree, otherwise. :-)

Jack, I probably ate at the Deli next to the Race/Sports book 5+ times at the last 2 NABCs. It's really good - and cheap, as well. Too bad we're moving to the Cosmo next year, with a piss poor race book, room rates almost double, and I doubt anything like the deli.

I'm pretty sure you are correct, Peg. They may get per diem for the day following, since it would have to be a travel home day if they didn't stay.

My #1 criterion for a Vegas site would be the one with the best Race and Sports Book. I suspect I'm in the minority, though. The Westgate was great.

The Hospitality chairman (or tournament chairman) is given a fund to support the free food given the players (usually at night). I don't think the ACBL kicks in for this. I believe it is funded primarily by the host District. Additional funds might be raised from other sources (gifts, advertising, etc.). The registration gift falls under this category, I believe.

Districts typically hold fund raising games for several years to fund the Hospitality. District 10 has been able to fun an additional STaC week for 3 years and some charity games - all to raise money for the 2019 Memphis NABC. We have committed a minimum of $50K to the tournament chairman for hospitality. It might end up being more.

@Jack said: “ I am going to ask for these calculations. Do you think I will get them?”

I wouldn't hold my breath.

He would have had a medical condition that explained it, and gotten a week or two off.

This is in a Strong NT context: like John, I play DONT-like: Rdbl = 1 suit >>2. 2x = that suit and higher suit. If they Dbl 2X, opener Rdbls for 2nd suit, passes to play, or bids his own 5+ card suit, naturally.

As opener, if partner passes, I RDBL with a “fast” hand - primed 4432. With 5332, I'll bid the 5-bagger or pass, depending on suit quality. Pass by responder is not forcing. Sometimes, it's just best to play 1N.

Is it possible they had a contract with him that they didn't think they could (or didn't feel inclined to) break?

I would have been closer to making a “Bluhmer” 4 bid than bidding 3N opposite marked shortness.
