That is the very core of the matter.

That auction was one of the most obvious diamond leads ever, the comment by east was revealing in itself of what could have gone wrong. It appears the selected players in the poll were unlucky in their thinking.

To link into another famous thread. Swedish bridge journalist and author Eric Jannersten wrote a huge amount of articles about international bridge in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Regarding Reese-Schapiro he seemed neutral. When commenting on that incident he talked about the Blue Team. He claimed the italians to be perfect gentlemen and models of behaviour. His description of Belladonna was that the italian superstar “.. very intensely looks at opponents and partner …”

A great player from the 50s and 60s, Manke Andersson (no relation), was declaring 7 in the last round of a mp-event around 1980. The slam was cold except for trumps of which he were missing Qxx. The lead took away the only entry to dummy so he now had xxx opposite AKJTxxx. For some reason a crowd gathered. Manke finessed and made the slam.

Jan Kamras is a great guy and a deserving President. Probably not the best No Trump declarer in the world.

I don't see Jordan-Robinson or Becker-Hayden in that list?

I thought Jordan-Robinson were forced to quit around 1970?

As long as we are stuck with the WBF and the EBL you mean. Arguably there is probably not of confidence in the ACBL either.

If the events 2015 were a starting point for something better, then the EBL and WBF have squashed that movement. Thanks for destroying the game when it was actually possibly to get it back on the right track,

This is like one of the foot soldiers going on to teach the italian juniors, one of the juniors was Fantoni.

I watched a decisive hand from the mixed teams in Orlando. One Geir Helgemo was forced to discard down to 3 hearts with originally KTxx. Unluckily the declarer played him to be brilliant and played him for Kxx which was correct. I confess he would have fooled me.

I think the age profile of US players is probably the most significant factor for domestic attendance.

As for international attendance there are many things that combine. I would venture that Tourism to the US has declined the last 2 years or so, the ETTD-effect.

It is not an advantage for attendance that international bridge bodies have been found incompetent in cleansing the game from cheats.

The international bodies have introduced an endless number of championships at expensive locations, this is a big factor.

I don't think talking italian bridge is racist towards italians. If I made a case against english cooking, that would be true but would not diminish english people like David Burn.

Jannersten was a very outspoken supporter of the Italian team which was evident from all his writings about them in the swedish magazine “Bridgetidningen” from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

I have ordered one from a friend who is going there. I will make her ask Avon for an autographed copy. That would make Avon join the illustrious company of Edgar Kaplan and Eddie Kantar who have signed books for me!

It is great for the game to have a team from a smaller nation do well! Very well done Singapore! Hope you kick some more “favourite team” butt before the tournament is over! In a Singapore-Sweden final I might think otherwise though!
