I can't imagine partner not bidding 4 if we had bid 3nt last time and gave them a chance.

is trump; 3nt would allow partner to cuebid 1st/2nd round control in or (the 2 suits we want to hear about).

When you say “standard”, I assume 1nt opening is 15-17ish.

However, you did not open the 16 count 1nt so I have no idea what you mean when you say standard.

Congratulations to the winners.

Congratulations also to Alex Perlin for coming in 2nd, who already came in 5th in the Robot individual that was held just before the start of the nationals.

70.14% I had when I lost to JonOttawa; my scores from that event were similar to yours Phil (high 60s to low 70s).

You have to play very well and have a little bit of luck with the random hands that you are dealt to win.

I have yet to be dealt a set of games where I had a chance to win, even if I made no mistakes. The time that I lost to JonOttawa I only had one mistake that cost ~1/2 a board and a couple of lesser mistakes over the 72 hands. I could not catch his 72.17%!!!

I assume that “systems on” means we play our preferred methods over interference. Therefore, 2nt here is better minor lebensohl.

If I was the dealer (as you have in the problem), I would have opened 1 and not 1.

If I am the overcaller (as I suspect you intended to enter), I would have doubled 1 and not overcalled 1.

This was closer to a 2 opening bid than a 3 opening bid.

Hard to tell partner that we have an opening bid when we passed initially.

It wouldn't be; I was just making a point that you need to clarify “solid suit” in your methods.

3♥ = solid suit, doesn't promise extras; incomplete description; does it promise AKQJ109x?

Does it guarantee a zero loser suit opposite a void?

Hopefully they make a decision prior to March 2020 on the exact location of the championship. Hopefully any of the final 500 that have to fly from halfway across the world will travel a couple of days ahead of “day one” of the three day championship.

Barry, I am not talking about the preliminary stages.

It states that the first two days of the championship are played on funbridge, and the final day is played on bbo. This makes no sense as they should utilize just BBO at the finals (the larger of the 2 in terms of user size).

The idea of running a World Online Championship for best hand robot tournaments is great. The financial revenue from these events will be gigantic, with tens of thousands of players from around the world. The total awards to the players of ~$500,000 plus the travel/lodging costs of the 500 or so players that qualify for the championship is virtually nothing as compared to the money that will be spent on entries. Top players would generally choose to participate not so much for the money but for the world championship.

This form of the game is arguably the truest measure of player skill in certain aspects of bridge. There will only be ~300 players from around the world with a legitimate chance of winning the event.

I do have concern with the idea that players will need to use both bbo and funbridge to participate in the championship.

It is nowhere close when playing equal level conversion doubles for / as I would here.

Why are you giving us conditions to play a silly system where a 1 opener is restricted to 11 to 19 HCP hands. There are many 9 or 10 counts that are clear 1 opening bids, and even some 8 counts. There are many 20 HCP hands with that would open 1, such as:

AJxxx
K
AQJx
AJx

I would have doubled the first time to get both majors into the picture.

If partner has just a singleton in and holds the Q or K in with length, they have every right to switch to a low when they get in with the . It does not take a “great player” to find a low shift in that case.

Our hand has no Queens or above anywhere except in the suit.

You may consider me to be a terrible player by playing the 9 as a suit preference card for . You will be hard pressed to find anyone else that has played with or against me more than a few times and considers me to be a terrible player.

Are you ignoring the fact that declarer bid nt twice? I have yet to hear a good reason for why anyone thinks the declarer may not hold the Q or at least length if they only hold 10xxx(x).

It is possible for many cards to have clear signals on defense. The goal is to use all available information and make defense as easy as possible for you and your partner while still making it as difficult as possible on the declarer.

Richard, your analysis is normally pretty sound. Please explain how (why) you believe that attitude in the suit is not already known when the dummy hits with the AKJ?
