Perhaps the next time I post something written in a flash, i will read it before I post

The phrase “ Monaco and Germany ( reluctantly ) withdrew was not what I meant

I am changing this on the record

Reading all this just makes me so sad and cynical

It brings all the memories and emotions that I felt from when Boye started his Crusade

From The initial excitement and euphoria I felt that finally the cheats were exposed , the pride when Israel voluntarily withdrew, and Germany too, and then Monaco ( reluctantly ? ) withdrew , the feeling that I had when the WBF were forced to uninvite BZ, etc etc

Those were heady days , what with the formation of the High Level Players commission and other such Bodies, the declaration of intent by the various governing bodies that enough is enough and that finally the game was going to be cleaned up and no more coverups , no more using legal ramifications as an excuse for inaction . As I write this , the wonderful , pure emotions come back flooding all over me . It was truly wonderful .

Then the years that followed , lots of grandiose talk and intentions , and those feeling gradually dissipated, as nothing happened , and in fact things went backwards as titles were not stripped or completely renounced , FN remained no 1 and 2 , Rona was re-elected , with all the ACBL votes going to him ( including some people I used to like and respect ) . There was ( I think ) some positive change at the European bridge league, but to date I haven’t seen any evidence of that.

Then the anger at the legal “ battles “ , the CAS, Germany reinstating etc, and the bewilderment I felt at how this could be actually happening and now to the absurdity of Monaco winning the 2014 . I truly don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

The one thing that struck me is that even with all is , Israel managed to do “ The Right thing :) , FS and their records were gone without any Cas or other BS . How is it that they managed this while the Monaco outcome was the exact opposite ?. Just so ridiculous

So today , even with this noble effort by Brad and Steve, and the #saynotocheats, and the words of support by all the big names , you would think I would feel some hope?

Sadly no, that flame has been extinguished, all I feel is sad and cynical.

And even with that said, a little voice inside me says “ Please somebody prove me wrong!!”

This really makes we want to stop playing , and I almost wish I could do that . But I love playing too much

( and please trolls, this is just my emotional rant , and I’m sure I have Made some spelling , grammatical and factual errors - please forgive me for that . LOL)

As Marion said. “ this is Madness “.

I really hope that all the players support what Marion says and will refuse to play against them when it comes to “ crunch time “

I know I will

Jlo my brother !

Can’t love you enough for this post

Bridge needs more of people like you and Boye who are not afraid to speak their minds and tell the truth no matter the consequences and SO much less of the current authorities and the players who won’t speak out for fear of recrimination and protecting theit professional situations

Is that like a corollary to Hanlon’s Razor ?

Hi Alvin

Assumably you remember ; but for clarity’ you came up and introduced yourself to Tom Hanlon and myself during the ( I think ) the platinum pairs in San Diego ( if not this then some other major pairs event recently )

I really enjoyed our conversation; and both Tom and were impressed by your candour and interest as we discussed the pro and cons of the way the event was run. I have no doubt that your inviolvment will be seen in the way the world pairs will be run in Orlando

However, as I read your comment above , especially “ if you want bridge to be considered a top level game /sport “…… I cannot help but thinking :-

Those are the trees , and the forest is :-

If you want bridge to be considered a top level game / sport, then the governing body needs to act in a truly fiduciary manner, with the interests of the game and and the players as their primary responsibility.

The reality is that I think we all have work to do

I look forward to seeing you in Orlando , and catching up again

Regards

Leslie

Well.

Clearly I am a sucker for punishment and not one to back away from a “ fair fight “ but the whole direction that this thread has taken is really bothering me .

Boye's original post and some very interesting , meaningful follow ups by many people I respect are extremely important issues and very critical in moving forward and dealing with the problems that are making the way we play bridge today a flawed game . And in addition a bizarre and confusing post by one of the admitted cheaters. These are comments well worth a lot of discussion

Instead what we mostly get is a lot of drivel , self centred comments mostly about semantics that detract from what ( to me at least ) is one of the important issue in bridge today

Sigh…….

Oh dear !

I sincerely regret the phrase I used to describe this and this was definitely not the part of the issue I was trying talk about

As i said I didn’t recall the exact words but tried to convey that it was not a big deal

Perhaps it was more like “ Les , we know each other well , but if you carry on like that , you’ll leave me no choice but to call the director “ All I know is that I was not upset with Boye

However one thing is clear to me

Now I remember why I stopped posting on Bridgewinners !

I think that the reaction of the 2 comments above exemplify one of the first hurdles we have to get over

That thinking and the culture behind it is so wrong ! - I committed a fouls and got a warming ( as a soccer comparison) Boye did nothing wrong and in fact we must all follow his example !

I am thrilled the that this issue is now being discussed openly by the top players for 2 reasons :-

Firstly , I do agree and consider this the biggest ethical problem and the most prevalent form of cheating in bridge today

And secondly , unfortunately, for me it is a personal problem. I sometimes have bad tempo at the table which I attribute to 2 reasons. One is that I only play the 3 nationals a year , and find that the for first day or 2 I am rusty , and even later in the tournament it takes me a board or 2 to get into the flow of the game . The other is that sometimes I “ live in my own world “ at the table and am not aware of the consequences of my tempo breaks

So under the title of “ Mea Culpa” or “ not all tempo breaks are created equal “ let me share the following Story:- ( as I felt guilty reading Boye’s article -lol )

In last years Spingold semifinal , first quarter against Boye and Espen, on the second board we were defending. Early in the defence , Tom switched to a K and i made a horrible tempo break with the card I played . Honestly , I was not fully “ in the game “ and didn’t know and wasn’t ready for what signal I wanted to give. Now I don’t recall recall if it made any difference on the hand and know for sure that Tom would have strived not to take advantage of it or in fact would have made the knowlingly wrong play if it did.

Boye turned to me and said something to the effect of “. Do that again and I will call the director “ in an very unhappy manner .

Was I upset with him?- not at all - he was 100% right. I was just upset with myself that I had done this

I guess my point in all this is that it’s an extremely complex issue , not easily solved , but’s it’s a great start that the top players are discussing this openly , and that there are wilful tempo and unintentional tempo breaks . But the former is cheating and the latter can be unethical . I think it’s extremely important that this distinction is recognized and discussed and treated differently

Oh yeah

And also..

Sorry Boye !

Lol

Randy, I am not qualified or knowledgeable enough of the actual “ goings on ” to answer your question. I was just expressing my personal sentiment

Boye:

you continue to inspire me with your integrity and fearlessness without regard to the consequences in this regard.

I know it is difficult for many of them , but I wish other top players would follow you in this, although I'm beginning to see that the fortress we are up against seems almost impregnable

I couldn't agree with you more Boye

The saddest part is that I'm beginning to feel that this is so pathetic that I just don't care anymore
