Raghu,

A picture's worth a thousand words. Well done.

It's so glaringly obvious now, isn't it?

Good points, Nick. But specifically how many of the very vocal top level players who have posted their disdain for F-S, and unresponsive bridge organizations here on BW have filed forms? That is the $64,000 question.

Perhaps the general public isn't aware of this avenue, but every one of the top echelon certainly does. If hundreds of slips were turned in on this pair alone, the governing bodies could not possibly have ignored it.

Or, against the other “known” cheating pairs everyone keeps referencing. Thanks again, Gail.

I have been waiting for someone to bring this up. Thanks, Gail.

And the ACBL is looking at having Committees made up of Directors instead of players? Thought I saw that this idea was being floated at the upcoming Nationals.

Thanks, Nick.

I would have thought such a consensus about anything would be hard to come by in bridge given the divergence in poll responses to bidding problems/bridge polls.

I'm just not in the know on such matters, and I imagine a great number of other participants of this forum also in the same boat.

Now I wonder how many of these known cheats find reputable teammates and dinner companions at tournaments. That is quite a disturbing thought to me.

What Is Receipt of Stolen Property?

Receipt of stolen property, also known as possession of stolen property or possession of stolen goods, occurs whenever you knowingly purchase, obtain, receive or possess any property that you know, or should know, is stolen, intending to keep it from the owner. (there is more there, but this is the gist of it)

The above is an excerpt from this website:

It goes on to explain in more detail. I would say this could easily be applied to certain prestigious events.

But Steve, if you buy items that you have every reason to believe were stolen - all the red flags exist, but you do it anyway because you got a $1,000 item for $100 or whatever reason (whether it be need or greed), you'd still be guilty of wrongdoing of your own, and therefore NOT entitled to restitution. The authorities could confiscate the goods and you would not “certainly” at all be entitled to any restitution, nor would you be recognized as a victim.

I believe this is the situation in which this sponsor now finds himself, and yes, perhaps the previous one as well.

Someone with connections, for instance, might hook them both up on Wall Street. They'd make a killing!

If some pair were guilty of cheating to this extent and they knew they were being taped and STILL chose to do it … how is it logical to presume that they are capable of feeling true remorse for these actions?

Spouses who cheat on their husbands and wives are happy as clams - not a spot of noticeable remorse, until and unless they are caught. Then they are so desperately sorry … yes indeed, sorry they got caught!

Couldn't do it while being more closely observed or while being filmed. Well, that's comforting.

Nice ideas Jim, but 10 year ban up against “Catch me if you can?” Well, look what happened here for your answer.

It's so damned hard to nail these guys and takes so much effort by so many, I'd say they'd ALL prefer to take their chances, although on some level they have now to be concerned with wondering if they might be caught… and that's a good thing.

A thought just occurred to me. If the same exact circumstances (as reported in the OP) had occurred, but in a Nationally rated event or International competition of some sort, would you all feel differently about the insignificance of the offense?

If you would, can you explain to us why it should be viewed differently?

What about the team itself? Couldn't they collectively decide for themselves that in solidarity against cheating they refuse to participate? Seems like it would be the right thing to do.

Correction. He didn't plead guilty to cheating. He said he was guilty only of stupidity.

Now I can't help but wonder which of my favorites are on the hit list of suspected players at the top. Sheesh, is nothing sacred anymore?
