Outstanding ideas, Alan. And your web page idea with recommendations for visitors to the U.S. could be implemented with minimal cost.

Yes thanks to both, that is certainly correct.

I couldn't agree with you more about the merits of winning because you're good and that this is no doubt the way to do it.

These type of intimidation tactics among some players are not exclusive to women's events, btw.

Maybe a well reasoned and intelligently composed expose' (much like your thoughtful post) about the experience right here on Bridge Winners by G would get everyone thinking about solutions and would eventually lead to one …

Although the facebook post did make me laugh … how anybody could think that to suggest the women needed to “get laid” was called for or wouldn't raise ire in the ranks seems rather optimistic, don't you think? And the salad thing was a little over my head, was the suggestion they were not only sex starved but fat as well? Why would any woman ever take offense to that?

Seriously though, I have no objection to her expressing dismay, disappointment or even anger with her opponents, I guess it's just the manner in which she chose to do so that reasonable people will tend to object to.

I have heard of that sort of bitchery in the women's events, and
steps should be taken to put a stop to it, but return bitchery wouldn't probably be the way to go about that.

No expert in these matters … but I can read, and it appears that in effect Gur's hesitation made it impossible (when referring to rule 16b) for his partner to (successfully) bid over it. If it had resulted in 4 failing, would there be any objection on the part of the appealing team? Would they call the Director to seek an adjustment back to 3 making?

It seems to me that **if** the Director was called at the time of the hesitation and not after the game was scored up, the ruling is perfectly in order. If not, well that's a different kettle of fish isn't it.

Ross Grabel deserves a shout out. Already won the LM Pairs and now a Monaco defeat to his considerable credit.

Well done, team Dunitz! Only isn't it Jill Meyers and not Jill Levin on the team?

ANY formal announcement(s), even if riddled with the typical obfuscation so rampant in these situations, would have been preferable to allowing the rumor mill to get cranked into high gear… both for the man as well as for the organization imo.

Here is my thinking fwiw … the other table has the exact same problem as you do (and maybe with a bit less information than you have). The only difference in their situation and yours is that they have a small deficit after the first quarter.

I say let them do the guessing. Lots of boards left to play, and I don't want to be in grand down one to their small making slam.
I'll risk losing 500 odd instead of risking losing 1000+ on the hand.

How right you are, Jonathan … a random team WOULD have been dismissed out of hand. As strongly as I dislike preferential treatment given to these hot shot pro teams, this really was a completely botched deal from the governing body side of the ledger. It's just a shame that the same consideration would never have been given to any team that found themselves in the same predicament. Money talks … always has, always will.

Meanwhile, I love the new team name courtesy of Mike Whitman.

So then the deadline wasn't 4:30 after all but 7:30? That clears that up pretty well then.

Guess all these staggered start times causes a hell of a lot of confusion for everyone.

Yeah, pulling a “Sarah Palin” was pretty bad form. (Unless it was a health emergency or personal crisis that led to the resignation).

I can see bidding 2NT to show support immediately, and can carry on over that easily enough. Perhaps that is the superior bid, but I guess I can recover if I start with the card showing XX

I have strength as well as support, and have plenty of time to show both, don't I?

For how long has he been the President? I know time flies the older we get, but it doesn't seem very long.

I kibitzed this hand played by a very well known player. I will refer to him here as “Bob.” I was shocked by the Pass, it seemed to me that 3NT was super normal. Apparently I have company in this department.

Peter brings up a point in his vote-changing post, however, my question about that would be would anyone actually pass this hand at the table? 5 card diamond suit, vulnerable, etc.

Are most of us off the mark on this one? While it's true that you would love to win a match exercising fine judgment being in 2NT making and gaining 8 IMPs on the board like Bob did, but wouldn't it be horrible to lose a match by missing a vulnerable game on this hand? Would you envy Bob then?

Thoughts please …
