Why did you make this comment? I wasn't trying to disparage the director. I just wanted to know if we had asked for an adjustment, would that have been reasonable. The director did say that maybe a double by East would have been more appropriate. Apparently, passing as a LA by East did not come to the director's mind.

Why not the average of those playing 2 Spades?? Three pairs made 2 SPADES. Two pairs were down 1.

It is clear that the bit suggested some action on East's part,

East said, “I knew I should do something, but didn't know what, so I passed”.

A double or pass seems appropriate here.

Someone is teaching this system. The day before we played this hand: N-S Vul West Dealer KQ102-975-AKJ82-J N Void-KJ104-763-A7653 E J984-32-J98-KQ108 S A7653-AQ86-52-94, again against a relatively inexperienced pair. The bidding went as follows: 1D-P-1NT(???no alert)-P-2D-P-2S by partner??? I thought for a good 20-30 secs and finally passed. Obviously this was not a success with us playing in our 5-0 fit versus the opponents playing in their 4-4 spade fit. Three E-W pairs played 3 Spades, down two. Three E-W pairs played 3 Dias., making. One N-S pair played 3H, down one. My partner, being unfamiliar with Montreal Relay, assumed that I had to have at least three spades. All the pairs that played three diamond were relatively inexperienced.

My questions are:1.Should the opponents pre-alert if playing this system? 2. Are the responses alertable? 3. What should I have done when partner balanced with two spades? I visualized a hand with something like six spades to the QJ1O and maybe 8-9 scattered points (not a success).

Had a problem with publishing. The hand was W K82-AQ97-J10-A876 N 106-J862-A862-K53 E Q754-K1053-K7-Q92 S AJ93-4-Q9543-J104

The bidding went as follows: W 1C-P-1D(???)-P-1H-P-2H-P-P-P.

I played this hand against a relatively inexperienced pair at the club recently. East bid 1 D because apparently someone has been teaching that you have to have five cards in the major to respond. I have run into this a number of times in this club with newer players, although it had always been a four card spade suit that was by-passed to bid 1 NT. Does anyone know where this might be coming from and what is the benefit of bypassing a four card spade suit to bid 1 NT. I think the person that bid a 2 card diamond suit in this case had somehow confused the the teaching of bidding 1nt with a four card spade suit.

The hand played from the East side makes three. On my lead of the spade 10 declarer managed to go down one at two hearts for a below average result.

I use multi vs multi 2 Diamonds defense (https://www.chrisryall.net/bridge/multi-v-multi-2d.htm). It works great and is worth the price of admission just to see the expression on the opponents face when we pull out our 3 page defense. One opponent said, “well I don't know whether you can use that we have to have a copy”.

The director wasn't interested and didn't even look at the East hand. I wanted the director to ask East what he thought when he bid 2C. Sometimes people inadvertently admit the truth, such as “anchor suit” by West.

I agree in retrospect that I probably should have bid 3H at my second turn to bid, but I don't agree with South asking about the 2C bid at his first turn as I would have sensed that something was up. Also I think the same would be true had I asked about the 2C bid at my turn to bid and then bid 3H. I did look at their card and saw it was marked: Michaels-minors-majors. I guess we have no choice but to ask immediately to protect ourselves.

As for South bidding 2H's, I play this shows something in hearts and interest in playing NT if I can stop spades.

East is the mentee and the card was checked Michaels-min-maj?? I think East got confused about “anchor suit” and deliberately chose to bid 2C with this hand.

Good comments. I think either East was confused or deliberately decided to bid 2C, knowing that if West bid hearts they could bid Spades and show longer Spades. Begs the question of what “anchor suit”. East claimed the 2C bid was a mistake???

This what I think East understood from the mentor, maybe mistakenly. But they have played together many times and it is hard to see how this mistake could have been made and that it is the first time this has happenened. That is why I wanted the director to explore further.

I am very familiar with “Bailey” and why I asked about the bid before bidding 4 Clubs. West told the director that the anchor suit would be longer???
