I don't have a problem with the auction until after 6 (if you're playing first-round controls). E is still in the dark about the K of and K of , and should ask. 6 after 6 should say, “Bid 7 with the K of , bid 6 without”. Yes, the K of is still unknown but if you think W's suit is longer and you can set them up, then you can take the plunge and pray for the best (we had an auction like this in Orlando where I bid 2 over p's 1 with 3-2-4-4 and it came down to a finesse and a 3-3 break to pull off 7).

There was a Junior triathlon at the start of the tournament last week. The US had difficulty fielding a team due to school, the World Championships a month prior, etc. I know it was hard because I ended up being on the US team that came together at the last second, which is when you know you're desperate.

In addition to Curt's comment regarding school, there was also the Junior World Championships just a month prior in China. That makes it really difficult for the Juniors who aren't pros (and there were a few in the Open category) to find the time to dedicate to both events.

They are playing the 2 response as could be short (source: I know both the players involved in this poll). That's why I disagreed with those who mentioned a 3 raise straight away, and hence why I'd raise to 4 over 3.

I don't think the 4 bid is horrid at MPs. Besides the shape being distorted (S sounds like a 5-2-4-2 instead of a 5-1-4-3) and N not knowing about an imminent tap on a lead, if S's suit was more meaty, it might be the right spot. With so many holes, S should pull.

I don't like the 3 bid when N is clearly trying to avoid 3NT. And when he shows max 2 card support, S should pull 4 with an empty suit, IMO.

Pulling one bid out of the bidding box at a time. It takes more time to do and put back together and no, it does not make you look as cool as you think it does.

The best part is when you're playing a match that's being Vupgrahed and one of the commentators (one of BW's most respected posters) suggests that your team might consider withdrawing. My teammates and I play matches to learn, not to save face.

Not even sure what the right adjective is for leaving in the X with quite possibly 0 tricks on defense.

It's funny, because I held an 8-5 on Saturday in the Common Game and a 10-bagger the night before on BBO.

The 8-5: Jxxxx JT8xxxxx - -. All white, it went 2C on my left, 2D on my right, and not quite sure what the right level was, I bid 4H. It went checked around to righty, who with 5-5 in the m's, didn't bid 4NT, and instead chose the wrong m, down a bunch. Turns out partner had AKx of H with a doubleton S and with S breaking 4-2 and H breaking 1-1, I was cold for 5H, while they're cold for 6C.

The 10 bagger: KQJxxxxxxx xx x -. All red, it went 1H on my left, 2C by p, a nonsense X on my right, and in an attempt to block out the 5 level for the opponents, I bid 5S. It went X on my left, my partner bid 6C thinking I was making some strong raise (I probably am without a firm agreement), and then I ended up bidding 6S, racked. A C lead hits and p has AT xx Axx KQxxxx. Now I pulled in 6, although 6D is cold from righty.

At least there is a light at the end of the tunnel for the Mets. The Jets are doomed for eternity.

I was saying bidding 3NT over 3C - not bidding 3H. I can't fault 4C over 3S either.

It's not the best partnership practice, but the best route to 6NT might start with S bidding 3NT over 3C with what rate to be double stoppers in the two suits has expressed doubt in. Unless N is strongly pulling for a C slam at this point (since a H fit has theoretically be denied), he might just blast 6NT over 3NT.

Granted, the other direction can make three slams (two of which are on a hook, and the other is a more difficult trump position), but that was not a good time to go for that number.

Great run by my friends in USA2. I know that loss will be tough to swallow, but considering this all began on the final board in the trials a few months ago, there's nothing to be ashamed of.

According to the bulletin, both 4th segments will be on VuGraph because as you said, they will finally have the bandwidth to broadcast it.

Newspapers have also become an afterthought of an industry in this day and age, and more and more of them are now just producing content online rather than print. Tracking down articles becomes a much more difficult task that way.

I don't think too many Juniors mind about that publicity, though. To us, the Bridge Bulletin is what Rolling Stone is to everyone else. That and social media are enough.

The Internet struggles to detect sarcasm but even that was detectable from about 20 miles away.

I played with Curt during not the last but the one before that New Orleans NABC (2010?). I'm pretty sure Ben was playing with Burke at that point, and I've known Burke since 2008. We're old.

Both plausible, but as Arjun did message me at 5 Chinese time one day, I wouldn't put it past him either :)
