The rules are you should call the Director. Personally,
I probably would not but I understand you have to
protect the field. This reminds me of something
that happened many years ago at a National pairs
event. I was playing against Mike Levinson who was
legally blind and he revoked as declarer. He called
the Director him self. The Director informed us that
we could not refuse a penalty. I have always felt
badly about that and it probably reflects on my
position on this hand.

Many years ago the Twin Cities tried the Stegman report.
It was a complete disaster because no one wanted to look
bad on the report so players only played with others
who could get the job done.

Sadly, I believe these announcements will become more
frequent. Bridge as we knew it is disappearing. At
least we were here to enjoy it when bridge was fun
and the people we met were great.

Meckstroth's low club to the Queen in 3NT with dummy
holding Q108xx and declarer holding two small was
outstanding! LHO had made a T/O double. He is one of the
fastest players on the planet(Maybe the fastest) and he
went into the tank for a very long time and came up
with the winning play.

I have chaired four Regionals and they were all
successful. One was the most successful
Tournament ever in District #14. It was Disa's
first US tournament. Ask her about it. When I call
out people who do not do the required work,
I know what I am talking about. You have to start
at least a year in advance to be successful.
What is required is too much to go over here.
Chairs who only send out flyers and expect people
to show up are not doing a good job.
I am not going to respond to personal attacks
because my service in promoting bridge speaks
for itself.

The ACBL does have an impact on Regionals. If they want to
change your date you have no choice. That happened to
the Nebraska Regional for the worst. Also, when they
asked the ACBL to send out computer blasts they said
no to all required. They would only send to members
who lived within a certain radius. They draw from all
the US and some other countries.

Bridge in the mid west is dying off. More players
move, stop playing, and die off. Having more
Regionals is insane. An additional point is the
people in Nebraska work hard and the others do
not. The other Regionals draw around 500 tables
because there are too many and the people who
chair them do very little to make them viable.

I am not complaining about the eliminated Sectional.
The Quad-cities did the right thing. That is the point,
The District did not!

“What we have here is failure to communicate.”
I know, it is too easy.

It seems to me that no one teaches active ethics any
more. I was lucky when I started, club members
played with us and made us aware of ethics and
much more.

There was a discussion about what should West bid over
four hearts. I think I prefer 4NT. The player I
watched bid Double. What do you think?

Google The State of Florida vs Joe Grue. I posted this
because of the speculation which as usual is very suspect.

My friends who did come to breakfast and stayed for one
regional event got free parking because I was staying
at the Cosmo. When locals do not attend, I think
they feel they are not getting a dollars worth of value
for every dollar they spend. I have felt that way
for many years now and stopped going to tournaments
on a regular basis because of many other factors.
I plan on only one regional a year (Nebraska) and
try to play in two events at Nationals three times
a year. My main concern is being treated with
disrespect by ACBL employees or administrators.
It is not that it will not happen, it almost
always happens and it would take a lot more
space to list these events over the years. I think
I posted what happened in Vegas in another thread.

When I was chairing tournaments, I had to get permission
to hold a Regional far in advance and submit a schedule
and a budget. Craig, you are probably correct in your
assessment but this shows how little the ACBL cares.
Apparently nothing has changed for the better. So,
people can play in a small pairs game and claim to
win a Regional event! Plus the odds of having a
K/O with a top flight is probably zero. I am sure
Pros have already made their plans so it is up
to Chicago members to make this a good tournament.
