When partner opens 1, she has 5 spades. When she doubles, she promises 3 spades, maybe has 4, almost never has 5.

To put it simply, there is a big difference between partner having 5 spades and having 3 spades.

Mel's rule of 17 is about when you should invite. More than what you should do when you have Mel's 17 or more, the best use of the rule is to tell you when you pass.

When the preempt is at the 3 level, you don't have an invitational bid, so Mel's 17 cannot be applied. As Steve pointed out above, you should look at how many losers you are covering for partner and how many tricks you are providing her.

Mel's rules are paint by number rules. Of course they cannot replace judgement. But for less experienced players, having a simple rule allows them figure out what they do. As they apply it, they will learn when the rule works and when it does not, and hopefully figure out why.

So whenever you bid 3, they will bid 4 knowing you will bid 4 and judging that you will go down. Even if they think you are going down in 3, why not bid 4 just to get you to bid 4?

Attendance is really minor for this NABC. The most important thing is to not suffer a huge loss like ACBL has been doing for one reason or another. Of course attendance is an important part of loos vs. no loss, but it is not the only part. I assume there will thankfully be no loss due to not meeting room commitment this time.

I think 3 would be more like the W and with a singleton or better yet, a singleton .

If S bid 4, they are more likely to have 10. Now, in addition to E having only 1 loser in , she is more likely to have 4 spades. 4 makes a lot of sense as a 2-way bid. But after 3, trumps may be 8 vs. 9. Both sides probably have ~20 points. You holding is useless. Why would W make a monster of it and bid 4?

Yes, I have read your previous posts/comments and understand the couch arrangement. That is why I asked whether you need to suite to make it feel like the home arrangement. In jest of course.

David, so when you two stay at a hotel, do you always have to get a suite so that the couch arrangement will work to its desirability?

“Good judgement is rewarded by the score and bad judgement punished by the same score.”. Not if the the good score is based on not letting opponents know what your bids mean.

According to Ed Reppert, all of you should be punished.

As Hank pointed out, if I were to come up with cheating schemes, the Bridge world would be a much better place. :-)

I have no idea what Truscott card is, but to cheat this way it is so easy. Have a code to what the top card in the slot means When the teammate takes out the cards, don't scramble it, or scramble it in such a way to have the top card remains at the top.

Is it more advantageous for the top 19 to play one on one with the bottom 19 or play in a 4 way to eliminate 1?

Cricket does not need any help to make it a laughing stock. :-) Just joking. I haven't been banned for awhile.

And if opener's hand is A, xxxx, AQxx, AKJx? How would the bidding go after 1 - 1NT?
