Once advancer passed, your side no longer has game intention. Since advancer may have 0, the only way you can X is with trump stack. In which case, one should only be so glad they walk into it.

I would overcall 1NT with 2=2=(54) and the right values with Kx any day. I would even do it with 2=3=4=4 if they open 1. If you and your partners don't like it, that is fine.

Once advancer has passed, overcaller's X is TO, including X of 2. Why can't the overcall be based on Kx in ?

Once the Q shows up in dummy, this is 100% count situation.

There is no right or wrong about this. Is this a true 11 point hand? Of course not. But if your agreement is upgrade but never downgrade, then it is what it is. Opening has its advantage as long as your side knows how to compensate for crap. Constantly put opponents under pressure in defense is an advantage too. In a way, it is like invite light, accept solid.

Why did W bid 3 then 4?

W shifts to J. Declarer covers, E takes the A. E plays another round, how is he to know if W has a doubleton or not? Say declarer does not cover, W plays another , same problem.

Better for W to lead a small . E takes the Q and sees 3 tricks on defense. If she plays another , W plays the J and it is crystal clear. Better yet, E can see there is no other way for a 4th trick other than a back (trump trick if there won't go away).

Are you sure partner has 4 ? How is partner going to read if you have singleton or doubleton ?

2 could be 17 with suit not good enough to jump to 3. Anyway, that is not the point. The partnership should agree if 2 is 1RF or GF.

When I X, my partner jumps to 3.

I think more interesting is what should W play on trick 2 to ask for a return.

So none of you or any of your partners ever bid 2 and then 4 as S with 4 spades?

Hesitate then play the J. Bridge is a simple game. :-)

This is MP. The 1 opening is not out of the ordinary. The lead was obvious. Some extra aggressive people may be in 3. Maybe S won't take no for an answer after Drury. Maybe opponents get to 3 and NS take the push. There is no reason to play to go down one more.

The reasoning in OP would make sense for imps.

Two friends can say whatever they want to each other and it is between the two of them. But if you report it in a public forum, whether the account of the conversation is accurate or not, it is no longer private.

i feel so sorry for Eugene. He had to wipe out the previous thread, which was redundant and inferior to a previously posted article on this hand and its associated comments (Kevin's comment about S doubling for a lead being particularly pertinent). Now he has to do it all over again. He has a life even if the rest of us don't. Disclaimer: I have been on Eugene's proverbial axe several times.

Rob, what is your objective? To set or hold them to 4? A lead and ruff will let them make, holding them to 4. As Paul Barden pointed out, after A, it takes J, and underfed by E (or 9 and E's underfead if N plays K, or duck if N ducks) to set. Simplest way to set is of course a lead.

There have been other articles on 3rd suit forcing, but yours would be a welcome addition I am sure. However, my main point is having duplicative posts on the same topics is counterproductive. Having a forum on it makes it easier to look up previously posted articles to minimize re-inventing the wheel, and increases the chance of the correct people reading these posts.

John, I never said it was not. I said that some distinguished folks on BW did not think so. I am too lazy to dig up the post now where the comment(s) appeared. I think the question there was if 3 was forcing after 2, or perhaps it was 3.

Go back to previous threads. Apparently whether 2 is GF is not universal amongst the distinguished folks of BW.

In many cases, you cannot separate the message from the messenger. What was posted could have been a purely private joke conversation between two friends or could have been a message with ulterior motive embedded in a Bridge article. Knowing what the messenger is about points to one vs. the other. Although both might be inappropriate for BW, they are inappropriate in different ways.

I propose someone sets up a Forum for 3rd suit (edited for usual silly typo) forcing. It is far more beneficial for those who are (still) interested in this topic and those who aren't to have all the posts on it to be concentrated in one location.
