Neat hand. It would be an ever better story if West turned out to hold KJ tight in and a 3rd

What a great use for all those leftover “Stop” cards! Red is the best color for ZT anyway.

Most Kit auctions have very close decisions with the alternatives carefully described. When the bid chosen wouldn't have been my choice, it is at least a reasonable choice.

Not this time. That takeout X is just awful, as evidenced by the tough choices on subsequent rounds.

Max, I support you. You are finding a way to make your voice heard. I'm not about to question your method because your message is an important one.

I think you need a longer time frame. Seems to me clubs would lose many players who enjoy going to NABCs and Regionals and only play at the local club to “stay tuned up”.

Was that 68-6? And without doing anything that might be classified as a horrible mistake. Yikes. Good news that the final was RR with 8 teams - please tells us you bounced back against the others to win the event anyway!

Hotel California: So that we make it 1977, assuming the prize was a newly-released album.

When they show up needing a partner, take their $$ before telling them who their match is ;)

More seriously, when I first went to the local club after moving to the area, I was paired up with someone from Jays category 1. We came in 2nd. Finding partners was never a problem after that.

The poll could be open to any BW member. But vote tallying would only count votes from people who had preregistered and whose documented skill level put them in the peer group.

Even more basic: when the bidding begins with Pass - Pass in tempo, why does 3rd hand need a huddle? Were they not thinking about their possible opening bid from the moment they picked up their hand? When they finally put a 1 level bid on the table, everyone knows it's not a full opener.

Let's not overlook the role of the director in helping the newcomers feel OK about all this. The director knows (or should know) who is new, and should be careful to communicate the ruling in a friendly, non-accusatory way that helps the newcomers learn that the director call is nothing to be intimidated about.

“If there was any BIT at all, it can only be because South has an ace. Keep in mind that this isn't some normal competitive auction where it would be expected that there would be a few seconds delay. This was a final 7NT call. 99% of the time the tray would be flying back across the table in two seconds where both players have made a routine pass.”

Maybe so, but every call should be made in tempo, even a pass following a 7NT bid. Your statement is tantamount to saying that defender following a 7NT call is allowed 0 time to think about a X. That can't be right.

I play bridge in a different world, Chris. If I had bid 7 NT off an AK, when 7 was cold, and told opening leader what to lead, and then objected when opening leader led what I told him to and set the contract, well, I'd be pretty embarrassed. The fewer people know about it the better. If I appealed, I'd be laughed out of the bridge club.

Not saying the players didn't have a legal right to call director and then appeal. Not saying the ruling was incorrect. Just saying I'd be hiding under a rock somewhere if it were me.

Peter, see what happens when you don't listen to big brother at the ACBL and stay in the host hotel.

Disagree. As a 999er, if there were meaningful events with limits below 2,500, I would attend NABCs. But those are few and far between. Red Ribbon Pairs, and what else?

I played Reno last time and it was great except for one thing: smoking is allowed in the casinos, and the smoke did get into one of the playing halls (not the convention center, of course). That's a complete reject for me.

The purpose of an NABC is to declare ACBL Champions. Anything else you can get at a Regional. I've never understood why there aren't ACBL Champion events at the lower levels. Why not a 99er championship event, with single sessions played over 2 or more days (qualifying and final). Same for 299er, Gold Rush, 1,500s, etc. (2 sessions a day above 299ers). You don't need to award any extra MPs, just let people know that after competing in the same 299er pair event all week, these last 2 days are special!

There are 5 championship events for 0-10,000 each year (not counting GNT/GNPairs). Titles are free!

Page 9. “South decided that if the opponents bid 4♥ he was going to bid 4♠ anyway, so it might be better to go there right away before the opponents coud get together.”
