One of my favourites, “Play as you have never played before, partner, play well!”

“Every day you play worse, and already today, you are playing as it's tomorrow !” - Credited to Leslie Barr at Stefan's Bridge Circle too many moons ago.

Am I alone in thinking that David should perhaps get out a little more?

In our football, soccer, if you will, cheating is de rigeur. Aplayer is barely touched and he collapses with screams of agony in an attempt to win a free kick or penalty, or worse still to get the opposing player punished, players routinely fall theatrically to the floor clutching their faces when the contact was with their foot or legs, they scream for a throw in when they , themselves, put the ball out of play and they agressively put their heads in an opponent's face and collapse in agony, apparently comatose, when replays show that there was no or minimal contact. VAR (Video assiatant referee) was introduced to prevent, “Clear and apparent errors”, but everyone seems to complain that it slows the game down too much and although there was a foul or an offside, it was only a little foul or a marginal offside and so should be ignored, and these people are on tens of thousands of pounds a week! Oh well I suppose they have more reason to cheat than the players who peek, those who signal , cough or hesitate illicitly or those, and I have had this more than once, who pepper predealt hands in home bridge matches with brilliances that they placed there. I always found it amusing to watch a player who obviously did not know the backs from the fronts, play a fantastic double squeeze or suchlike in a beautifully bid slam and then attempt to defend himself afterwards. Cheating at Baseball? Amateurs!

That is not why I play bridge, but, as our Northern friends so elequently put it, “There's now't so queer as folk”.

Was anybody provably damaged? If so, OK, but if not, why try to claim a better score than you are entitled to?

I played a hand recently where I opened 3C with a normal pre empt. Partner bid 3S (forcing) and RHO produced the Spanish Inquisition. I passed and LHO was ethically hamstrung. We went many off but they had a slam so it was a good result. The director and the appeals committee ruled in our favour.

Was it John Collings, in a European Championship who went 12 down doubled 7S after a psyche and proudly stated that anyone else would have gone 13 down. I think that he also stated that he would not play Seniors bridge until he died and even then expected to score above average!

I used to play at Stefan's Bridge Circle 45 years ago and I discovered that is you did not shuffle the new cards that you could make 3NT with 12 opposite 11 every time if you sat in the right direction. This lasted for a few weeks before everyone cottoned on.

The meaning was very clear as anyone but a frustrated pedant would understand. Anyway, if this is your main take on the post, have fun, live a happy (if somewhat shallow) life, and do try to find more things to fill your time.

I do not agree with you. Eugene is a grown person and, if offended, can look after himself. Your opinion on the post is not clear but it seems that you care more about a comment about Eugene's sense, or not of humour than a comment about beating women. Oh well, each to his own I suppose.

I , did not, and would not call Eugine names. I realise that he deletes posts based on complaints. If this is done as a matter of routine, then OK, but I must be allowed to voice my view. If he, or you disagree with it, then that is your perogative. As for my post, I read the majority of comments with some surprise, many American men and all the Eastern men seem not to see any problem. I am glad I am me and not them.

Umm, the person was not a bridge player, knew that my wife was, wanted to do something nice and would not read the book as she would not understand it. Is that OK with you?

Hmm, if this was my comment to David Burn, I would point out that he is a friend of mine and Gillian, another friend of us both and a strident feminist and a fearsome creature, would not approve and mignt disagree vehemently with him. Lighten up, both David and myself would recognise this as humour, do you understand that concept? Stop taking yourself so seriously and lighten up! I mean this in the friendliest way possible.

An interesting dichotomy between the views of out more Eastern friends and those from the West. Must be a cultural thing.

You know me - a total snowflake! Martens writes fine books, perhaps he should read them sometimes.
