Really? Jacoby transfers (which we wrongly call Texas btw) are deemed standard in France, and therefore not alertable. In 15 years, I haven't met a single partnership not playing 4-way transfers, even at the lowest level.

Is it a good idea, Mr. Brogeland?
In these gloomy times, the bridge community needs to see its leading figures at the table, just playing bridge instead of cleaning the mess because the powers that be proved unable to fulfill their duties.
You're not only the man of the moment, but also an outstanding player. I started playing bridge 15 years ago and the “young Norwegian prodigy” Boye Brogeland, barely out of his junior years, was one of the first top player I read about in a French magazine…
Boycotting means less (good) bridge and more dissent. The World champions will be welcoming the bridge world for what used to be an “Olympiad”. Good time to smoke the peace pipe, wouldn't you say?
We don't need more Moscow 1980 or Los Angeles 1984 (or Haifa chess Olympiad 1976 for that matter).

Just hope you'll reconsider :-)

Indeed.
You wrote “Polish player” (and it was not PG)
Our mistake (and mine in the first place).
Apologies.

The “reductio ad Middle Eastum” should become the new universal Godwin's Law key metric…

@Mr. Mestel

I never took up Icelandic, so now I understand why I couldn't get higher… :-(
I grew up riding your Dragons (well I did try) and Genna Sosonko's as a youngster, before switching to quieter waters like the Paulsen and the Taimanov (yeah I'm pretty ashamed).

Was it really so, that you could suddenly find yourself in terra incognita in such a wild and intricate opening, which you must have thoroughly (for what it means in our days of soon to come Multivac dominance) analyzed?

I very much doubt there is/has been a significantly more natural talent (for chess) than Karpov's ;-)

Surely sending Zimmermann back to Excellence makes no sense (anyway we've started playing last weekend)
So what do u suggest? An administrative relegation in DN2 could be a good compromise.

I do NOT judge Poles by their background and history. I merely hinted it was LIKELY they be tougher and less inclined to give in and compromise than Westerners, who have lived in relative comfort for almost 70 years. Toughness and willingness to stick to what you have is not a cultural metric.
I got 6 likes for this post, four of them from Poles, one from a Romanian (who even more than the other citizens of the Warsaw Pact countres must know what a dreary life means, seeing as his country was run by a megalomaniac who starved his people).
So maybe I wasn't that off target.

Not sure I will. My place is very close to the German border and I wouldn't like you to draw political inferences from an innocent gesture of assent.
Just kidding now ;-)

Edit: thank you for your like, Melanie. I'm just an old brat. Can't help it :-(

Well you know, we Frenchmen are not as subtle and keen on nuances as our English friends. “Sharp practice” has no real equivalent in French…

I never said the LAST 40 years. I wrote “ for 40 years”. Nor did I say that living in a communist country makes you a cheater, but that it was likely to toughen you up and make you less prone to withdraw for more or less vague philosophical reasons.
In case you had not noticed, I'm a staunch supporter of the Polish case :-)

Did Mr. Forrester not say that Piotr Gawrys consistently thought for a while with uninteresting hands, just to try and buy it at a low level?

And before 1989? How many years from Bierut to…I don't remember the last one (was it WJ?)

My English is far from perfect, but unless I'm very much mistaken “several” and “anyone” are not synonymous in the context.
Did I mention the Iraq war somewhere? Or was it another Poland-loving hooligan ? Oh yeah the “vial of mass destruction”

My body and my very soul shudder at this uncharitable thought, but I wonder if the vindictive tones of several of our friends from across the pond could somehow be linked to the fact that teams from the “continent with meaningless borders” (Hi, Jon) have now won three BB in a row…
