I wouldn't have started with 2c, and while I don't feel strongly enough about it to abstain, I do think that we would be better placed if we hadn't preempted ourselves. Our opponent made the cheapest interference bid that he could (aside from dbl) and here we are at the 4 level never having bid (or even implied) our second suit. With all those spades out there are you worried that the auction will go P, P, 1, P; P, P?

With the K instead of the Q, pass (from 2nt bidder) seems even more clear.

Director please… This deck seems to have 2 Qs.

So, what's the rest of the story?

I'm not worried about missing game. It's hard to construct a hand where partner has their (no) bid, has game values and didn't have a penalty pass (the likelihood of which I've already discounted when I didn't reopen with a double).

I am worried about losing the part-score battle. 1 gives us the opportunity to get input from partner. I've told her that I have diamonds and spades. Now she can take a preference or bid 1nt herself in the event that she, also, has a heart stopper. 1nt from me just doesn't seem to describe my hand as accurately which will make it difficult for both me and my partner if the opponents compete to 2 or 2.

Without ELC a double leaves you awkwardly placed when your partner chooses to bid 2. You could easily end up playing in your 4-2 club fit instead of your 5-3 (or even 5-4) diamond fit.

It's so good to see young people playing the game.

I bid 1. I briefly considered dbl, but based on my kxx it's unlikely that pard has a penalty pass and double misdescribes my shape. I stongly considered 1nt, but I want to bring spades into the picture in case - as Chris G. mentioned - partner has a fit without enough hcp to speak up. As I see it 1>1nt>dbl>2.

I really hope that if partner tanks and then bids 3 over my 3 cue that no one will consider pass a LA. I'm going to game. I just want a little more info. If I instead bid 4 and pard bids 4 I'm endplayed into passing.

It does seem that you may inflict this bid more often than you realize, since it's already happened 3 times with this “new partner.”

It does seem like partner is now informing me that his hand might be good enough for me to have made 4.

Unless one or both opponents psyched its hard to imagine that partner has enough for us to make 5 much less 6. As Bernard says, partner can bid on. My hand can hardly be much worse than this for my 4 bid.

@Jack - As of this writing the results are Dbl:39, Pass:7. My feeling has been that the threshold for LA should be about 10%, so it looks to me like (based on the poll) pass is a logical alternative.

That is not to say I'm not surprised at the poll results. I would double with this hand every day and twice on Sunday whether my partner passed in a millisecond or went into a coma (especially at this vulnerability and form of scoring). Perhaps I should rethink this based on some of the names that I see among the passers, but pass would not have been on my radar.

If your partner hadn't noticed previously then you didn't have an implicit understanding. If she says she didn't notice I think we need to take her at her word. It sounds as if she may be new to the game and has lots of other things on her mind. In any case, it has now been called to her attention and you now do have an understanding. What the director knows of your tendencies is irrelevant.

I'm doubling, but I won't be shocked if they score it up. If my a
doesn't live I'll be even less excited about my double.

I can't image you'll be very happy if the auction proceeds: p, p, p.

I think someone else posted this same hand without the double. I led the 10 then, too. Please follow up with more info later.

At the table, I doubled. I felt that double was pretty much textbook. My partner felt differently, so I figured I'd run this as a sanity check.

Pass. I'm willing to let partner decide. We can't know the best spot from our side. Looking at our hand it's almost equally likely that double, 6,or 7 could be the best resting spot. She knows more about our hand than we know about hers.

If we do end up in 7, I hope partner has the 9 since entries to her hand are likely to be at a premium.

I'm a 3nt bidder (hoping to catch partner with the red AKs and hoping I can find the j). If the opponents tell me I'm wrong I'll run to 4c. Of course, down 3 undoubled is still a bad result and unlikely to make me popular with my teammates.

Clearly, there are more hands where 4 nets a plus score than other bids, but they do pay that bonus for bidding and making game…

Do we play ELC? With ELC, 4 gets better since we we may get another chance if the auction proceeds: 4, p, 4, p; ? Now, we can try 4 knowing, at least, that we're not in a 3-3 fit.
